The really easy and low-tech way is to find an ocelating fan, hack it, and just plug it in. I like hauntproject.com to get ideas...

(mentions the problem of removing the fan blade - causes overheating - and a workaround)
Or here are a few other ideas using a motor configuration:

That is the purpose of the linkage - the motor goes around but the linkage makes the head go back -n- forth.

Something like this would work. But instead of the rotating motor moving the lever, have the head mounted so it can swivel and attach the linkage rod near the back of the head.

Or mount the head on a reindeer motor. When the head would reach the stop in one direction, it would reverse automatically.

hmm dave in the grave had a very simple mechanism. i think i will build a pvc body then bodify it it fit a base whihc the motor will mount to by the side and a back block will support the linkage.

I'm actually building a grave digger now, and am planning on using a security camera motor I found at a yard sale:

I found it relatively cheap online: here. (but still 6 times what I paid - maybe you'll have luck @ yard sales/flea markets)
You can change the degree of rotation, and it has a lot of torque. It should turn the head I bought no problem.
