Okay, I know a lot of people here have boarded windows on their house. This may sound like a silly question, but I was curious how everybody attaches them to their house. If you use wood (like pallet wood or old fencing board, which we might since we just redid our backyard fence) did you just screw them directly to the window trim and after Halloween patch the wholes? Or, do you attach some hooks or something else that you leave up year round? I think I would like to use wood from our fence, but I'm not opposed to using foam. Any suggestions or input is appreciated.

When I made my window boards out of foam, I used strips of velcro to hold them on the window frames.

I attached my boards to a thin frame (think of a picture frame) painted the same color as my window moulding. Then I just had 2 screws at the top of my window that I would hang the frame on.

I don't board my windows, but last year I decided the front porch was just too cheery-looking. Couldn't talk my partner into letting me paint the house, so I hung painted drop cloths on the wall, partially cut out the windows and put up some old lace curtains that I had "dyed" in watered-down gray paint. Made a huge difference in the setting on the porch and I plan to put up some permanent hooks so that I can do this easily - without the staple gun - in the future. (Sorry for the large photos.)

Thanks for the help everybody! I'm leaning towards building the "picture frame" and attaching the wood going across it. I kind of was thinking about maybe permanently attaching some eyebolts or something to the windows that I would paint the same color as the trim. That way I could attach some clips to to the frame and it would be an easy put up/take down process. How would something like this work out? The hubby isn't real crazy about the patching holes every year.

Someone mentioned to me last year you could attach the boards together, seperately from the house, screw a couple industrial sized suction cups to a couple boards and stick them on the windows. Living in Las Vegas, all the homes here are stucco everywhere, even the overhangs, and it's really difficult to attach things to your house, so I will be trying this method this year.

Otherwise, if you can find some old 2x4's that are a little wider than your window and theres a sunken window sil, you can wedge a few boards in there and they'll stay up.

I boarded up my windows last year and held them securly without srewing into anything. I made a picture frame out of 2x2 and attached wood from old pallets. I held them to window by placing a firring strip on the inside of my window frame and secured a piece of tie wire from the prop to the firring strip on the inside of the window frame. I do have a sill on the outside for the prop to rest on. The firring strip on the inside just kept it from toppling over.
