I want to make some gargoyles for column toppers, I want to keep them lightweight, but be more durable than paper mâché. I'm not adept at molding things yet( this is only year two for us) but I'm thinking molded spray foam. Just don't know where to start. Any ideas? The gremlin thats in this section is awesome, but the mold alone was $90. We live in Oregon rain country, so I think it will have to be a foam sculpture, plus it will be on top of a column so I don't want it to fall off and kill someone.

You could carve it out of foam board , like the one used for the tombstones and build up the foam by layers and glue each layer together until you have the height you want and then paint it with dry lock. It will give it a stone finish and the foam will make them light weight. The only thing is with the glue you use. I think with the foam glue you might be able to carve through it but I have never tried it.

That takes some serious sculpting or carving talent. I went on a quest last year trying to find gargoyles larger than 12" high and finally found two made out of a foam rubber. I think they were about $60 each and came from Canada. Buckaneerbabe showed me Stolloween's tutorial last year. He does incredible stuff. Here's the link to his tutorial

I found some cheap foam ones at Old Time Pottery right after Halloween a couple of years ago. I even talked them down a little more off the marked down price because there were small pieces of foam broken off. I just gave it a paint job and it looked a lot better than the original. Here's a link for what I have: http://www.buycostumes.com/Gray-Pape...EF=OTC-ceframe

Mine is in a slightly different position. The wings are flexible, but you could probably dry lock those. I left mine as they were simply because I liked the feature.

All in all, I think it might be cheaper to buy your foam gargoyles than to make them, depending on what size you want. If you want something substantially larger (say 3 feet tall or more) you should go with making them. Otherwise, I'd stick with purchasing them. You might even be able to find a coupon or something.

    Hope this helps!

Great stuff everyone, thanks a lot. I love the paper mâché ones, but don't think they'll hold up in my weather situation. I may just get a couple of the ones you suggested, but I really enjoy building my stuff myself. More than likely I will try to carve them, if anyone has anidea for the best glue I would be all ears. Thanks everyone.

I purchased my Gargoyles at Walmart for $15 each just before Halloween. I was thinking of carving my own from foam but ran out of time. To protect them from the weather, I covered them in monster mud. I'll try and attach pictures so you can see how they turned out.

I like that a lot, that's what I'll do I'm sure. I looked into how much the materials would be for what I wanted to do this year, they were going to be a little steep with my other projects. Those would work great, thanks.
