    Fence posts for pirate theme?

I'm looking at doing a pirate theme for this Halloween but I can't figure out how to do the fence posts. I like to fence off my yard so I don't have to worry about little ones getting caught up on wires and what not. The only problem is trying to figure out how to do a fence post idea that makes sense with pirates. I don't want to use the cheesy pirates skeleton ones you see. I'd like to make it look like a wharf or something but the wooden posts I was originally going to use are too heavy and I can't seem to get them to stand up right. Any ideas? I was also thinking about using rope but what are some good stakes to use to connect the rope together? Like I said my first idea was to recreate a wharf-style fence.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

My original idea was to create some sort of wooden wharf-style fence with rope like this:

I don't know if that's possible or not.

An apartment complex just pulled a fence they have had since I moved in. It looks just like what you have pictured here. The pilings must be almost a foot in diameter, and the rope is thick enough to be a hawser. They just left them laying on the ground in the parking lot. I keep thinking I should go snag them for the pirating I do, but don't know where I'd store them. There big enough around and heavy enough they would probably just set in place.
Going with H71's idea and running a bit widdershins, if you took ABS pipe and painted it to look like wood, you could get bushings that can be screwed into a wooden base(normally used for toilet drains) and then bunch a few together and wrap them with the rope. If you use a large enough plywood base, they won't fall over, and you could also add some sand or some such to give them heft.

What about cardboard tubes (like used for concrete) and cover them with mache?

There's an "artist" named Kim Nielsen that posted some pic's on Stolloween's Facebook page. Really cool stuff. The site is in Danish, but I used MS Explorer's translate feature to read it.

Plus, Stolloween's FB page has photos from others that did pirate themed items as well. Check it out.

That's what I did. I bought cardboard concrete tubes and painted them. I added lots of rope around each one and tied them together. Looked great.

I use a fence for my pirate display. I've picked up some posts from Home Depot and cut them to the size I wanted. Then hammered a 2 foot piece of re-bar into the ground and attached it to each post with fence staples.

I used 3 foot long 4x4's and 2x4's and shaved the base to a point. Hammered them into the ground and used a mixture of plastic chain, rope or creepy cloth to run the span between. I had zero issues with the hundreds of ToTs getting into the closed off area. It wasn't the strongest security fence to say the least but the point was made and my visitors followed. I did the same thing the year previous but slipped cardboard tubes over the top and faux painted them to look like marble columns. That proved to be too much work but looked cool while also provided me a base to place projectors and lights to shine on various objects.
