I thought I'd share the early stages of this project. We wanted him to sit up somewhat slowly and elected to use a 12 vdc linear actuator as opposed to pneumatic actuator. We plan to have the coffin closed and have a banging and knocking coming from inside, then have another actuator raise the coffin lid while this character rises to a sitting position. Before building it we looked at some similar things on the forums here but everything was pneumatic. Some had some impressive construction with some great welding work but we wanted to do something that would be reliable but not require substantial framing or welding so this is what we came up with.

Next will be the coffin and the coffin lid raising mechanism.

Pretty cool. I too like the idea of something reliable and not having to have electric and air to work it. Must air units get pretty violent so this slow movement could be really creepy when music/sound is added. plus, you can use a vampire/skeleton/zombie rising and all would look really good. Good luck and please share fully completed videos/pics.

Love it. I also been thinking about using a linear actuator. Ive seen guys at truck shows use them for tilt hoods and moving license plates up and down.

I think a lot of us will be watching this one very closely! Really nice movement (any weight problems pushing a full sized Bucky?) Can't wait to see the rest!

Make sure you check out travel speed when you go looking for a Linear Actuators . Two other things you need to think about. 1. most of these are 50% or 25% duty 2. you will need to buy or make some type of a controller that will reverse the motor to lower it...unless you do it yourself each time.
