Last fall I purchased a Firefly lightening machine, halogen lights, and used an mp3 player out to rock speakers for sound. (mp3 player plugs into firefly to sync flash and comes out in 1/8" plug as well, like headphones) Problem: sound is not loud enough, especially for an outside cemetery haunt situation. Does anyone know what I need for speakers? Or does anyone have speakers that they would sell? I'd like to keep the cost down.......

What is your speaker budget?

My suggestion would be a pair of outdoor speakers and some sort of amp. Possibly check your local goodwill or salvation army to see if you can get a bargain on some used powered computer speakers.

Ran into this same problem. Basically you need a big expensive DJ speaker to get the awesome knee shaking rumble you expect. Getting ready to buy this speaker that balances big sound with a tight budget. Heard it at Guitar Center playing the thunder track that comes with FireFly. Sounded great. Just gonna get one speaker because I use the mono track anyway: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringe...27-i1449707.gc
By the way, this is a BIG speaker: 30# and 21" tall

Look at computer speakers with a subwoofer cube. It won't make the ground shake but it'll be a heck of a lot better than a simple 2 speaker system. Office depot's $50 Cyber Acoustics system goes on sale for $30 quite often.

There's also the big Klipsch ProMedia system that Best Buy carries, it goes on sale rarely but it's my favorite speaker system out there. The only problem is that the PS/2 connector in the back tends to break and will need to be replaced. So far so good on mine after 2 years but it's a big complaint.

Cyber Acoustics have bigger speaker sets, and Altec-Lansing and Logitech also have comparable systems. Like I said, they won't be earth-shattering but you're gonna get a lot more rumble out of them than 2-piece sets. Unfortunately, none of these are remotely outdoor-safe.

If you want more power and keep the cost low look into plate amps and car speakers. Most run at 4 ohm or 8ohm. You can also wire them in series or parallel...but that is another thread. Split the signal to a real subwoofer and you have a all in one system. While it takes a little work...building the boxes and whatnot the effect is amazing.
I have 2 subs running off of a 150watt plate amp and 2 car speakers. It gets super loud and roars like a lion.
Your other cheap alternative is to buy a sterio reciever that has a sub input. Mix the audio signal for a left and right channel and you can have different sound coming out of each speaker.
Some serious power can be had for around the $100-$130 range.

I use a surround sound system. The bass of the unit makes the thunder come to life. It can be kept indoors and the speakers are placed outside. If they are not weather proof, mine I place in ziplock bags to keep out the water. This system has worked perfectly for me.

Salvation army or thrift store...... I bought a receiver with built in amp & a pair of pretty darn nice - big - speakers for $45. on a weekend when they have they're 1/2 off sales on electronics.
Has awesome bass for the lightning at a great budget price & I've had it for several years & ended up using normally the rest of the year for running my tv sound thru it also.
When you look in the mirror at midnight,....what looks back at you.........
