    Lots! Its great stuff.
I usually mix 5 gal of drywall muc and 1 gal of paint of your choice. Mix mix mix!

I've done rocks, trees, whole walls for texture.... we did a cave one year and I have gotten to where I use landscape fabric with the mud. pretty cheap and very strong.

If I build it, will they come ?

I've never used it outside... Other than our tree that was on a float. The float was built inside and then outside for only 2-3 hours.
I've heard many people say that they use is outside but it needs to be sealed with some polyeurethane or something.

When I saw "home made" in the title I thought that someone had actually started making the stuff and selling it.

Do a search. There are lots of tutorials and how-tos on here, as well as on the project sites.

I thought the same thing as far as selling mud haha, ditto on the formula, 4 or 5 to 1 works for me. Also i live in oregon and made headstones for the first time last year, i coated them really well with plain old latex and they held up great. Ojne caution on using anything but latex over latex( such as polyurithane) it can and probably will ruin the latex. it bubbles out and works like a great paint stripper, no kidding, I've seen bad things happen from doing that. but think of it this way, houses are painted with latex, with the minimal exposure your props will get to the elements, latex will work just fine.
