Soooo...this little gem is available at my local thrift store. It's about 30"x42" and really very creepy. Almost perfect for my circus/freakshow haunt. I would paint the frame in a checkerboard pattern to enhance the circus effect but what to do with the monkey? Does it need embelishing or leave it alone? turn the balloons into something? Add text to the balloons? Thoughts?

The way his hand is proping him up almost lends itself to holding a skull.

I would try glow in the dark or UV paint and put in a few skulls in the balloons, maybe a skull in the monkey's paw (oh, remember that ghost story? ) and/or some bloody gashes and skeletonized version of the monkey...

If you've seen the movie Orphan, the girl does pretty little pictures that have invisible UV paint of gruesome things that you can only see when the blacklight is on:

If you do the blacklight stuff, you could have a blacklight on (they don't do well with dimmers) and have a regular light fade slowly in and out so that as it gets dark, the UV light will take over and the scary stuff shows up.

Maybe I need some sort of off/on black light effect like in the movie. Happy-creepy monkey changes to terror monkey...btw, does anybody else thing Terror Monkey would be a good name for a band?

And maybe a bloody knife in the other hand...

I'm not a big fan of blood and gore, but that just works.

1st off - That's a great creepy picture to hang in your haunt just the ways it is!

But as far as haunting it out a little more...
How about mount the picture itself on some thin plywood ( maybe 1/8) to give the prop structural strength.
then cut out one or more of the balloons from the picture with matching holes in the plywood behind the balloons.
Then replace the painting's balloons with peices of actual latex rubber balloons (possiblly clamped between two layers of plywood to hold them in place)
Last you have little plastic skuls that will fit though the holes in the plywood and you push them through into the rubber of the balloons.

The haunting effect would be one where one minute your looking at a creepy picture of a monkey and the next the balloons are being strecthed out into skull shapes.

Just a crazy Halloween idea for your monkey!
Have fun - share whatever you decide!
