Here is one of the projects I've been working on as of late.. It is no where near being done, but the laborious part is over and now I can have fun filling it with the minor details that will bring this gift to life!
A very close family friend has a passion for film that is unrivaled! From a young age he would come over and drop of a film (or trilogy for that matter) and ween me on the latest and greatest blockbuster had to offer. The same gentleman also has a deep love for the Horror and Sci-Fi genres! I remember watching Night of the Living Dead for the first time with him introducing the film and it happens to be his all time favorite. His home is a trove of all things awesome from a very own home theater (dubbed the Slaughtered Lamb Cinema) to props from Horror films and all kinds of props from two of my favorite trilogies, Star Wars and Indiana Jones! His prop collection is way too rich for my blood, but I decided to make him something that he can't buy somewhere else as a Thank You for molding me into the devious character I am today)
He frequently hosts movie parties inside his home theater, The Slaughtered Lamb Cinema, which is a nod to an American Werewolf in London. I decided on making a prop from the movie and this is what I came up with. It was inspired by an old silverware box my Grandma has in her dining room. The box is going to house silverware on the top, but it is going to hide a trove of much neater delicacies underneath! Under the false bottom there will be a pistol, silver bullets, a bullet mold and possibly a powder flask. The premise is that everything in the box above can also be melted down and used to make more non werewolf friendly bullets!
The box is made entirely of maple and stained a red mahogany. I silver leafed the "Slaughtered Lamb" logo on the front. I tried to stick with the silver theme, so I used silver chain to keep the box from opening to far when my attempt at painting brass silver failed miserable, but I think I now prefer the chain method anyway. The box is partially lined with silver fabric. I am also going to draw in a pentagram as seen from the film on the backside of the trap door.. I believe pentagrams were used to ward of Werewolfs.
This project is far from complete, but hopefully I have it done prior to the next all day movie party on the 19th of this month! Nine days.. time is a wasting!
Enjoy the sneak peak! Updates should follow!
Btw Not that anyone would care to hear the musings of a fellow haunter, but I decided to buy a domain name and start a blog on all past and current projects! http://www.thedismaltrader.com You won't find this project on there until the gift is delivered (so don't spoil the SUPRISE!!!,) but some of my projects have a lot bigger picture files on my blogHappy Haunting!

Very nice craftsmanship, did you use some molding for the base and add to it or do you have the capabilities to shape everything you need ? Again very nice!!

My Grandpa's workshop contains all kinds of goodies, routers, wood shapers and the lot, but I took the easy way out on this one and found some pre shaped maple crown molding
The angles of the molding led into some interesting fitments with the lid, but in the end it came together good enough.. haha..
Now if I can only get over the shock of the price of the crown molding.. geeeez! I'll play around with shaping next time around.. I'm sure I'll have another project like this in the future and I'll take advantage of said tools and maybe I can hone some new skills. Thanks for the compliment
I had a good teacher!

Maybe that's why it's "Crown" Molding? –

To be able to comfortably afford it, you must be one of those people wearing an actual Crown on your head! Not the margerine crown, maybe not the hamburger crown either.
You have done very nice work!
I have been saving some crown molding now for maybe 12 years, never gotten the nerve as of yet to Hack on it! A fine craftsman really doesnot live inside me.
It is nice stuff, leftovers from a local Bank's remodelling."My Insanity is well-respected, until they wiggle free and become a stringer for a tabloid"

That is a beautiful piece and love that color stain which shows off the beauty of the wood. Nice work on the logo.
