My annual luau is coming up and I want to build a volcano for it. I need some help figuring out the best way to construct it though!

I'm thinking about 6 - 8 feet tall and hollow so I can put a fog machine and lights inside of it. If it could come apart for storage so I can reuse it that would be great. It also needs to be pretty cheap!

I have a bunch of large cardboard boxes at my disposal along with some PVC of various sizes. If I can utilize any of that to cut back on costs that would be fantastic.

    Any ideas?

Form the shape with chicken wire and if you have time, paper mache over or use the spray foam , carve down and then paint.

That would take a ton of spray foam! But I HATE doing paper mache.

This screams Chicken wire, Burlap, and Monster Mud all the way!!

One good layer of the burlap and mud, BAM!, your done and ready to paint.

Hmmmm.....never worked with monster mud before. It's really heavy isn't it? That would keep me from being able to store it since all of my stuff goes up in a loft.

I suppose you could create 2 halves using those 2' x 4' pieces of styrofoam you get at HD and stacking them in kind of a 'stairstep' to form the cone shape. You could then smooth the 'steps' to make it look more realistic with a belt sander or something like that. It would be lite but that would take a lot of styro and to try and smooth the steps would be an incredibly messy job.

I would think you could use some garden tarp or the weed protectors to cover chicken wire and 2x4s

Hi Rikki. Yes, some simple wood structure, bulked up with the boxes you said you had, covered in chicken wire and then tarps or sheets like Empty_W said should do well. And if you really want to give it that hard texture, maybe experiment with painting on monster mud (I wouldn't soak it in the cloth due to your project's size and the weight it would add). That should be able to be broken down and stored, but you may end up trashing the cloth if it has monster mud on it. A red light with a fogger at the inside of the top like you'd mentioned, and you're volcano is ready to rumble.

For another approach, check out how Devils Chariot made his volcano:

    Sounds like a fun luau!
