Ok last year I bought the little clip on watch battery operated LED's. Kind of disappointing. This year I want to go with some sort of possibly battery operated spotlights, something better than the little LED's. Anyone have any suggestions? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen numerous threads on these lights, they are apparently pretty good. I haven't seen anything similar in Canada, I may order some this season.

Trex, they're ok, but they lose light real quick and the red ones are practically useless.

Here's a good how-to, but the LED used in these is a blue. The source for the LEDs (Electronic Goldmine) may have other ultrabright colors in stock. In any case, the design is very good and you can use multiple LEDs instead of a single 10mm by changing the resistor value. FWIW, I agree with you about the red clip-ons, but the blue and green worked great for 5+ hours with no noticeable change in brightness.

What I've done for this year is eliminated anything battery operated that I could. Batteries seem great, but they get weak and are a real drag to service during the night[s]. All of my animatronics now have power adapters. There's no way I would have main lighting running on batteries. Accent lights perhaps but even then, batteries go quick. I use these lights in all available colors-

I get them as my needs dictate, not full cases of them. They use very little energy and put out great color. Check my pics in my link to see.

Since moving away from batteries, it now becomes managing wattage so nothing blows a fuse. These low watt bulbs are fantastic for that cause. TONS of color with very little wattage used. Also, if you get to know the different zones of your fuse box, you can run extension cords from different rooms outlets to the outside which avoids overloading one outlet- such as just the outside outlets. With all my electricity going, the only thing that really taxes anything is multiple fog machines. So I have to make sure they are managed with different zone sources so no one outlet overloads. But batteries just plain stink and lights & batteries don't really mix- if you want a stress free night. Good luck.

I did the Jack's LEDs last year too. I made the mistake of thinking I could use them as primary lighting. They work okay as (what they are) small spot lights to highlight a small object/feature.

So at the last minute (Halloween Day) I scrambled and bought some ground lighting from Home Depot (the cheap plastic stake type). I used the "party" CFL's (Red, Green, Blue and Yellow). The lights did not have any covers (the fixture didn't come with them) so I made them out of whatever was handy (plastic bucket I cut, Cardboard and even a T-Shirt). Now that I have some time (if it will quit snowing here in NY). I plane on making better covers to direct the light more.

I also used the LED Flashlights from Home Depot, they actually worked pretty good. I did what Terra recommended (thanks Terra!) and bought colored film for photography. I used wire to make makeshift stand so to adjust all I had to do was bend the wire. I used these a spotlights to highlight a tombstone or facial feature.

I want to take it up a step but like you, don't know where to start, so I will play with it, research it and make it up as I go!

    Good Luck!
