I thought I could buy this and take the Santa out and add a pirate to it. I want to have a pirate going back and forth from my house to a tree and I thought I could use something like this . If not any idea what I could use to do this?

Yeah I have a few that I changed from santas to gremlins in my monster museum. They are very small, like 9inches tall.
and the motors go out pretty quick, I think in three years five of my seven just stopp.ed working

Heh- you bumbed a thread after two hours? Patience was never my virtue either.
the requirements for the motor would be
1- battery operated- the unit shouldnt have wires coming from it in order to climb freely
2- When the motor binds it needs to reverse direction- Deer motors do that- in the toy santa climbs a beaded chain and turns around at a point where a bead is missing then travels down the chain untill he hits another bead that is missing.
3- the motor shaft would turn a sprocket thats teeth fit into every other chain loop.
not to tough of a set up really.
you can see the action here
