I need to build a pirate helm for the 2011 season but having an issue locating what I call the dough roller ends (where your hands go). I looked in Lowes and bought a stair case spindle, but no matter which way I cut it, it doesn't look right. If I can find the ends, I can use the spindles.

I just used the small staircase spindle with a wheel from Harbor Freight. I drilled holes and installed stop nuts that the spindles just screwed into.

When I built mine, I used the porch railing spindles from Lowes. I cut them and used a plywood sandwich for the circular part of the wheel. It took some piecing together, but you can get a good idea from this photo. I animated it with a rotisserie motor and home made linkages.

We used 6" Table legs from Home Depot or Lowes... they were right around a buck-fifty each.

Stained 'em and we're pretty happy! Good luck!

Great job on the Ships' wheel everyone!

I got mine from a Nautical decoration shop (I don't remember which one), but I do have a wagon wheel that I may convert into a Ship's wheel to add to my set up.

I would love to add a motor to mine. Here is are a few pics of my current one:

I bought mine at HomeGoods not cheap but a nice piece, it is 60" dia., I keep it displayed in my home all year, some day to be in the nautical themed bar area when that project is a go.
