im starting to get an idea for my electric chair prop i plan to build for halloween 2011... i have started the mechansim and built the figure at put noodles for buffness but now i have the pneumatic part.
I have a cylinder 4'' stretch which is good becuase it should only move alittlw back and forth.... im currently looking for a good solenoid for that 1/4 ''. something like the 5 port 4 way monster guts one i saw online but alittle cheaper than that...
my question is when its activated by a motion sensor how do i get it o move rapidly back and forth many times i feel that it would only move back and fort once right?
im very confused on how it works so if someone with alittle more experience or perhaps a video could show me that would be aweomse!
Thanks,
Chris

There has been a recent trend towards using reciprocal saws and jigsaws for the motion. I'll see if I can find the link and post it to show you. Alternatively, try searching this prop forum (I'm pretty sure it was posted here)

Your best bet is to use the motion sensor to trigger it, but to get the kind of motion you are looking for, you will need a control module like a pico-boo or some other type of controller to fire the solenoids to activate the pistons.........

Don't really know if you figured out your chair yet. You posted this a while back.
A 1/4 inch solenoid will open that cylinder very quick. Although reworked I did use them for my coffin thrasher. They will move in and out at fast even violent speeds. One simple press of a "keybanger" controller will send that cylinder to its max. Just press it quickly.
If your cylinder is double acting(2 ports) then you need a 4 or 5 way solenoid. If it has 1 port then a simple 3 way solenoid is all you need. The spring will return the cylinder back into it's closed postion and send the air out the exhaust port.
Always match your quick connects. If your cylinder has 1/4 openings then use a 1/4 solenoid. Same with a 1/8 inch cylinder use a 1/8 solenoid. You will lose movement if you go 1/8 solenoid into a 1/4 port cylinder. A 1/4 solenoid into a 1/8 cylinder is fine because you are reducing the amount of air from the solenoid to the cylinder.

My 1st elect chair was manually triggered, I used a jigsaw on the chair back at the shoulders & 1 on the bottom under seat, it thrashed like crazy. Plus the noise from the jigsaws helped with sound effect of electrical shock even though I had a sound clip playing, but between the 2 sound effects & jigsaws going, scared the crap out of ToTers !

Use an orbital sander for the vibration and a few e-crackers for the sparks and startle sounds, all triggered by a wireless remote control outlet.
