For years, music companies have put out CD compilations of movie themes that promise to be the “ultimate” or “complete” set. And most of them are woefully disappointing. While they contain the themes to great movies, they’re usually performed on synthesizers or are knockoffs that don’t have near the power or beauty of the originals. But this collection is different, it contains the originals by all the top composers in Hollywood.

To begin with, the four CDs play like a lesson in movie history with the earliest tracks going back to 1922′s Nosferatu, continuing to 2009′s Drag Me to Hell. By taking some of the most powerful music (not just themes) from eighty-seven years worth of horror films, this collection gives the reader a real education in influences and advances in the art of scoring a movie. The composer list reads like a who’s who of music, with names like Danny Elfman, John Williams, Elmer Berstein, and Pino Donaggio.

    01. Drag Me To Hell (End Titles)

That is a good list! I thought this was some fan collection, but you can buy it on Amazon.

It's great to see the original performance of these songs. I always feel cheated with the knock offs...

This is a crazy collection. I downloaded it and scanned it for familiar tunes, but half of the material is unfamiliar to my ears. Props for posting.

If you were to realistically put out a "definitive" collection it would take dozens of CDs to hold it all. It is a "LARGE" collection yes, but hardly definitive.

Probably the best collection I've seen for movie theme music, though it would be impossible to collect ALL the great music onto one set of CDs (where are the 40's on this set?). At least they had the wisdom to use the original recordings. Thanks very much for sharing this.
