Wow, Atelier*Motives thanks for the video, link and pics!
I've already looked for netting (russian veiling) here without success. Should have seen me trying to describe it without knowing the word for it haha and in my thickly accented dutch!
So, you think just regular black tulle will look ok? That's no problem to find here.
The russian veiling reminds me of hair nets lol or fishnet stockings. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places

see if you can find a Millinery Supplier near you. Regular tulle would work too, but if you're specifically looking for the Russian/french veiling material a millinery supply store would be your best bet.

Did you find a hat yet? You could always get a big brimmed hat and make something similar to Lydia's from Beetlejuice.

No, I havent found a hat yet
Keep going to thrift stores and searching ebay and the dutch craig's list but coming up empty handed. Most of what I find on the net are new (and expensive) hats.

I have an extra black hat covered in lace I could send to you, or if you like I could fashion a tiny top hat into a mourning hat for you. All you'd need to do is cover the postage.

Oh that's really sweet of you! Thanks!
I'm not sure the tiny top hat would look right on me as I'm a bit on the older side What do you think?
Black hat with lace sounds good.
How quickly can you send? It will take 7-10 via air mail. My party's on the 31st.
I'll send you a PM with my address and you can send me yours to mail the check to.
Can I send you something to return the favor?
Oh and I tried making the hair piece with the heart shaped felt and roses that you posted but it didn't turn out well.

I gave up on finding a wide brimmed hat, and used one of my own from my collection. It is a black velvet close-fitting suit hat from the 1940s with sequin details on the sides and a bow on the back. I took some regular black netting, folded into 4 even layers, then pleated it like you would a paper fan. Put a few stitches with black thread on one end, then sewed that end onto the back side of the hat (into a fold in the construction of the hat). Pulled the netting out from the pleats to drape over the front of the hat.

All of the stitching I did so I can cut it off later and not have any damage to the hat.

I had a cute black and orange spider that I stitched onto the back side. (another one is going on my shirt front at the cleavage. ) The spider also hides the veil's stitching/join on the hat.

The veil flips easily over the back so I don't have to wear it over my face all night.

I was going to put the spider ribbon onto the edge of the veil, but hubband said it was fine without it... anyone have any opinions? I'm torn - they are so cute, but would it be too busy?

Wow FG, you really need to stop dieting

The hat looks FANTASTIC! Using a spider to cover up the stitching/joint was a nice move!
I dont think the veil needs the ribbon either. I would use it as a choker instead. I was planning on having a black velvet ribbon as a choker....if I had one with spiders that would have been even better! But of course that kind of depends on if you are one of those fortunate people who have a nice long neck!

I need to START dieting... My model just needed less makeup and isn't as camera shy.

My hubby suggested using the ribbon as a choker too... I have a regular sized neck, so it wouldn't look as graceful, but still I think it would work nicely.

How is your hat search going? I'm thinking if you can locate ANY decent looking black hat, it can be modded with a simple black veil to look "widow-y" (I wasn't expecting my hat to turn out so well). Added bonus for using a close fitting hat, you don't have to worry about bumping into the brim all the time.
