I'm really liking the idea sbell2547!

What kind of paint did you use for the effect?

I used poster paint for the base coat then watered down acrylic for the next gray and green-gray coats. The last coats I put on with a sponge. The tree I did last night was done with a sponge loaded with gray and green paint swirled together and dragged down the tree to give it some depth.

Here's a thought ~ Below I found a small leafless tree that had been painted black and halloween ornaments were hung from it ~ I think I'll save my Christmas tree this year, put it to the side of the house to dry..then with gloves pull off most needles ...then paint black. Break off a bunch of branches to give it that creepy odd look and then hang something Halloweeny from it...Maybe a scary dead xmas scene next Halloween.

From BHG : Sickly Yuletide
Sprout the skeletal remains of a neglected tree in a dark pot; then drape its bony limbs with a garland fashioned from black beads, handmade paper ornaments, and mini gourds with ghost faces drawn on them.

I'm sorry they didn't work out for you. After many try, try again, attached are my completed trees displayed at work.
