I have a ton of white candles that I plan on using around my house in sconces and other places. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the candles creepy instead of just the plain white.

I've always been convinced that the creepiest candles looked well-used, completely encrusted in dry wax tears, like the one Dracula carried down the staircase in the 1932 film.
Take a candle and put it on a paper plate or sheet of wax paper. Or place it in the sconce.
Take another candle, light it, and let the wax dribble onto the top edge of the unlit candle. Let it run down the sides, build 'wax-cicles' all down the sides. If it's in the sconce, let it dribble down onto the sconce as well.
One candle can give a fairly heavy treament to 4-5 others.

I completely agree with Spats. I really like white candles for Halloween...they're kind of ghostly. But covered in wax droplets is definitely the best look for them, especially if there's some soot mixed into the wax.

You could also dribble red candle wax on white candles to give it a bloody effect.

I've found that spraying candles with water and then lightly hitting them with black or brown spray paint and then the water again immediately after the paint gives them a creepy "used" look. Works on any color candle too.

You could lightly cover them with glue and roll them in cinnamon or some other spice. They will look dirty and smell fantastic when you burn them.

I have used a technique where I fill a bucket with water, and then spray black paint on the surface, dip your candle all the way in the water and slowly pull out, it gives the candle a spider web type of look. (make sure you wear gloves)

some very cool ideas for candles. Rikki, how long does it take you to have them covered in wax droplets?
anyone have any pics?

Hey Tippy, I burn a lot of candles, although I've never owned white ones I'd still say that what spats is recommending would be the best. I burn mine for a long time so they naturally get the wax droplets, and it really does give them a far more creepy, yet romantically gothic appearance. Being white though, some of the other ideas sound fantastic as far as making them appear creepier on a darker level. Let us know how it works out for you
