Does anyone have a paper mache clay recipe that has worked best for them? I have found several different ones online but I am not happy with the finished look.

I made a lifesize seal and he is lumpy. The recipe I used was blown in insulation {paper}, elmer's glue, flour, salt and corn starch.

I searched the store for liquid starch and was not sure if it was laundry starch or food starch....

I have covered the seal with joint compound hoping it would smooth it out but now he is lumpy and streaky....so it looks as if I will be sanding him also....ugh! It is pink until it dries white. My next try will be to cover him in monster mud.

If it was me...and I'm no professional...I would just do another layer...maybe use papertowels (without texture) so that it will take less time (ring out really well or it will take days to dry)...and leave out the insulation in this layer. I normally only use flour salt and water (adding elmers only if i have it) in a mix consistant with a thin pancake mix...wait about 10 to 15 minutes and then it is thickened up a little and ready to go...you should be fine after painting and sealing.

You use laundry starch in paper mache. I've no clue what food starch would do in mache.

You could always just use paper strips & cover him in that. I just use watered down Elmer's when I mache. I've never tried Stolloween's recipe though I'd like to try it just to see the diff.

Well I have shredded up some tissue paper {the giftwrap kind} and I am going to try that today. Also got some paint to make monster mud. I am not giving up on this yet....I really want it to work....
