I would use tea bags boil the tea bags and put the cheesecloth in a bowl or whatever container you prefer. It will make it look aged you can also very carefully burn it around the edges. And you can also use fake blood on spots or splatters. I went to Halloween express yesterday and they had a new product called black blood its supposed to look like dried up dirty blood, I think that would give it an interesting touch.

I distress mine with hot coffee in a spray bottle. You can make it darker and lighter in spots depending on what you're looking for. Then rip, tear and shred as much as you want . Saw it on an HGTV special a few years ago...cheap and easy!

I'm going to agree with the rest of the group. Coffee and tea are great, low-cost ways of distressing cheesecloth. Try doing a tea dunk first, then spray or splatter on drops of coffee after the cheesecloth has dried for more variety than you can get with either on its own.

I use a combo of all the above. I tried adding some extra this year and used black compost. It worked great. Problem was I had a single piece 100 yards long. I lost most of my color trying to rinse the dirt bits out. Soooo.... if you have little pieces, dirt might be an option, just not on huge pieces.
