Last year we made these witch brooms as seen on HGTV.

Yes, they were pretty simple to make. However, wooden brooms are becoming a rare item. Try your local farm store, etc. They are not usually carried at your Target, Wal-Mart, etc. Also, a word of warning. Cutting the strings out of the brooms is NOT as easy as she makes it look. This is messy, time consuming and our fingers had blisters and hurt like hell. But, as you can see in the photo. They looked pretty good. Ignore the skeleton riding my daughter's bicycle in the photo. He kept riding into the shot.

That really is a very creative idea and seems super simple - but I can see how it could be a pain in the behind!
