Has anybody tried dyeing burlap black? I was looking to get some advice or see if anybody has been successful in dyeing burlap with black dye.

I've never dyed burlap but I do know that most black dyes will dye things a dark grey & not a true black despite the name & color on the box or bottle.

You could test a small piece & see what happens.

I'm sure eventually if it stays wet it will break down, but burlap is used to make Monster Mud reapers & gets wet with drywall compound & it's used for landscaping so it should be OK to put into a bucket of water with dye.

But that's just my guess, like I said I've never dyed burlap. Also I'm just assuming it's the landscaping type, not the fabric store type. The fabric store type should dye fairly easily, the landscaping type, not so sure. Just remember you're not gonna get blackest black like the box color.

The difference is that landscaping burlap has a looser weave. If you're gonna try the fabric store type, you may wanna see if they already have it in black, like this site does, but it will be more expensive.

Only 100% cotton will take dye. I dyed poly black and it turned out a gray color like RCIAG has said. They were tableclothes and this year I had some black spray paint and sprayed the tablecloth and it was much better. I sprayed it in certain areas cause I did not have a full can. It smelled a bit and I washed it and it didn't wash out so next year might spray the dining room tablecloth that I also dyed last year. I did buy the fabric spray paint in black and sprayed a runner that I had but it wasn't worth the money and did not go far. I didn't wash that so don't know if it will hold.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before

I have burlap which was dyed camoflage from Academy and there is black in the mix although it might have been a screen print. They may show it on their website so you can see. Also, It does not fall apart when it gets wet, I have washed it and dried it in my dryer to take out the stiffness. I say go for it. It does however have a smell to it.
