Greetings all. I have a large costume project in mind that I am currently investigating and was hoping to get some material suggestions. What I am thinking is a full body dragon suit that uses digitigrades stilts, animated wings and a neck/head based of the standard Stalkabout structure. I’ve been able to design the majority of the mechanics (untested of course!) but am coming up short on a material to use as an outer skin. Obviously with the amount of work that will go into it I would like a very durable material that will last many years without degrading. I had thought of foam pieces coated in latex, but fear the latex will damage in storage throughout the year. Anyone have any suggestions that would both look very realistic and also last?
Thanks!

Rubber latex shouldn't sustain too much damage if stored properly. Once cured, freezing doesn't harm it too much, although excessive heat can cause problems. You shouldn't fold it or stack anything heavy on it, laying flat or hanging it up would be best.
You could also try some suede, faux suede or similar fabrics, glued to the foam pieces. I do believe they make a faux snake/reptile skin fabric, although you may have a tough time finding it in a matte finish. I have only ever seen it in a high gloss and metallic shiny.
You could even try exterior paint. It's latex based and designed to hold up under all weather conditions....somewhere in the north-woods darkness, a creature walks upright.
And the best advice you may ever get is never to go out…at night.
