Ive made a victorian dress from scratch once for a vamp and a couple years before I threw one together from a gypsy type shirt from the hippy shop in the mall and layered a couple of big flowy skirts( One was a costume gone horribly wrong) then put a corset I had over I had over it and threw on a cape I had made and it looked pretty good. But they sell historical patterns on line if that helps.
