I have been working on some clowning and a clown character. I use greasepaint for my clown face. Here are some things I would like to share about using greasepaint.
Makeup is a great alternative to masks. It allows for more expression, lets your skin breathe, and you can eat and drink without having to revert back to your everyday self. If you are choosing to go with makeup instead of a mask this year, here are some tips and tricks for Halloween makeup.
There are many different types of makeup available. I prefer to use greasepaint. This is often found in round cups. It is on the thick side, which allows you to use it for large areas as well as small details. A little goes a long way. You can purchase this from any costume shop or Halloween retailer.
You can apply greasepaint with many different tools such as brushes, sponges, or your finger. Make sure you apply to clean skin using clean tools only. Start with your light colors first, then getting darker. If you need to remove any makeup or create sharper lines, do not uses makeup remover! I take a cotton swab and wet it with a little saliva (if you are doing your own makeup) and run it from clean skin across the makeup where I want to remove it. Makeup remover will ruin any makeup that touches the area it was applied.
One thing I highly recommend is getting translucent powder. Applying it with a puff and then brushing away excess with a powder brush will set the makeup so that it does not smear or wipe onto your costume. You could probably swim in the makeup after setting it with powder. I powder after applying white and then again after applying the rest of my colors. Do not over powder, it does not take a lot to set the makeup. Too much powder and your makeup will crack. After powdering, you will notice the color is dull and not vibrant. Take a damp paper towel and gently dab the powdered makeup.
To remove makeup, I use makeup remover wipes that I purchased at Target. I can remove a full face of makeup with just one wipe.
A couple makeup safety tips:
Never share makeup unless the application tool is washed each time you go to get more.
Don’t save your opened makeup for the next year. Harmful bacteria can grow on it.
Baby powder is used by a lot of professional clowns. Pour it into a sock so it is in the bottom about the size of a tennis ball. Knot it ant throw it in a zip lock bag and shake it around, it will be nice and coated. Every time you dab with it it will repowder itself.
