My 12 y.o. daughter wants to do "Astrid" and I think we need to go with that and the "Deadly Nadder"(her dragon)... Looking at trying to do it similar to the 'Joust' characters from "Labyrinth."
I figure on making PVC pipe U-joints, in the neck and tail, along with some linkage, so they move together (head-up/Tail-up, head-left/tail-right, etc.).
I hope to make the dragon-wings 'functional,' with additional linkage.
Looks like I'll use a PVC frame, covered with fabric-backed foam, for the most part, covered with spray-adhesive and colored.
Anyone with tips on puppet construction is more than welcome to chime in...

I don't have any advice, since that's not really my area of expertise (not that I have one). I just wanted to say that your daughter is awesome for wanting that costume

Haven't really used upholstery foam for any of my projects in the past but have always been tempted. Did a little search on the web and found that a bunch of people swear by the following book. Maybe you can find it at the library or pick it up cheap at amazon?

Cool Beans! Haven't heard of it. Even joined several puppet sites, trying to get help...
