Ok i am making a jack in the box costume for work this year. Not you typical cardboard box jack in the box, but am using stretched muslin and pvc pipe to create the box.
My issue is that the width of the box needs to be about 47". The halls, doors and cube entrances at work are 36" or so. My idea is to create the frame so that it collapses in ward, or rather shrinks in width so that it can fit through doors and such.
I thought about using two sizes of pvc pipe that can fit inside each other so that they expand and contract. I also thought about putting springs in the pipe so that if i let go it "pops" back in place without much help from me.
The question becomes where is a good place to source springs? I tought about going to the $1 store and collecting bathroom toilet paper holders and using the springs from them but did not know if that is the best way to go or not.
thanks
Z

How about you have openings in the back of the muslin so you could quick put it together at work or put small hinges on opposite ends top & bottom with a little brace to hold corners out when done. Sorry no time right now to draw it out for you.
