My idea for this years costume is a scarecrow. I am basing my mask off of this Image Gallery I am using real burlap which i already have. I also have crow skulls for the necklace and a fake crow for the crows head popping out of the shoulder. I am thinking of using a foam latex prosthetic for the face and will get teeth also. I want this to look as real and scary as possible. The only thing i am not sure of is the wardrobe. What should i wear with it. Should i where a weathered old flannel shirt with some jeans and old work boots? Your opinions, comments and ideas would be much appreciated.

Here is a photo of last years Halloween costume. It is the Caribbean pirate costume along with the slack jaw the zombie foam latex prosthetic.

Fantastic (and nicely unsettling) undead pirate costume! The rich blue color works surprisingly well.

I think the flannel shirt/jeans/boots ensemble would be quite appropriate; I'd recommend that you weather it to the point that it looks like it's about to fall apart. Maybe use some black spray paint to further distress it. Perhaps some blood splatters and dislodged stuffing for good measure.

You could also get a couple big panels of rough fabric (like large-weave cotton fabric and more burlap), heavily weather both, and wear them poncho-style with a rope or fabric scrap belt. You could use the cotton fabric (maybe black) under the burlap over-layer. Just wear dark clothes under the giganto-poncho, dirty it up, and I'd imagine you could get a more old-world quality to it, at least pre-flannel .

I was thinking of going old world style with a poncho like top but i was worried if not done right it will look cheap but i am leaning in that direction again because of you. Does anyone have a suggestion for hay without using real hay.

You could use raffia. The natural color looks like dried hay. You could cut it to whatever length you need. I'm tossing around the idea of a scarecrow as well. I like the idea of a mask like Scarecrow from Batman Begins. No idea what to do for clothes.
I wear Halloween socks all year long

Blue jeans, blue jean jacket, some strands of hay protruding from the cuffs...that was it.(Nothing on the head or face)
This won the grand prize in the costume contest I was entered in 25 years ago.
The night before my costume:"Grabstein Feinsmukker" (Butchered German for "Graveyard Gourmet") won first place for $300. This second night only other contestants could vote and they all voted me out very early! (Sort of like a reality show,"Off the island!".. nastiness thing)
The first winner was a flasher but they couldn't allow him to win because the winner was going to appear on local tv! Second place was the minimal scare crow and I think he won because he was the bar's best customer (they knew they would be getting the money back in rounds for house!)
I quickly grew to hate costume contests.
    I don't drink.
