looking for a good quality, heavier fabric type. Ive seen loads of thin cloth or nylon cheap ones in the shops, particularly around halloween time, but looking for a good looking convincing one.
any help appreciated.

This may not be the style that you're looking for, but check out Museum Replicas Ltd.
Here's a Monk's Robe and Hood that comes in black (though not pictured, unfortunately): http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-403-...-and-hood.aspx
Other than that, try googling other renaissance faire or LARP (live-action-role-playing) oriented sites and also theatrical-quality costumers.
Hope that helps, if only as a starting point.'A mind of metal and wheels . . .'

I was looking in some pattern books at JoAnn fabrics today and they had a book with a hooded cloak in it that was easy/no sew. Then you could make it out of whatever type of material you wanted.
