Now is the start of fall clean up. The spent flowers and vegetables get cleaned up and the garden slowly but surely turns over into a Haunted relm. So does anybody else incorprate Halloween into fall clean up. The once flower filled urns and statues in the garden quickly are turned into part of the cemetary that springs from no where is October. Also the corn stalks and the vines and much of the spent plants will apear in some form in the haunt. So am I alone or are there other haunter/gardeners who keep the haunt in mind when the clean up begins?
So today I spent an hour shucking seeds from sun flower pods and veriouse other flowers for next year. I dry them out first. I find that many of the flowers in the garden can be dried out and used in flower arangements in my cemetary display. I also use dried vines and creepy decayed things from the garden to up the anty on the creep factor each fall clean up.
Yes I like to use vines and gords ,large grasses and tree limbs and hallow logs. I'm a seed saver to and I love it when I can share seeds and plant starts with my freands .
Ok so Im not a experienced gardner as of yet but the last couple of years I have really been getting into it. I am all about the old country looking gardens, I like to stick with one color scheme, usually purple and get all types of different shades of purple flowers, then I like to incorporate old statues and urns. We have this great nursery by us that has the best looking old urns and statues. They are not cheap however so I may have to put one of those on my birthday list I live in Florida so my garden issues do not involve bunnies or gophers but keeping it green is an issue and lots of white fly Now we have this super white fly that the usual stuff doesnt work on, those suckers are so damn tough they can bring a ficus to its knees, never to be brought back again, and ficus are not easy to eliminate.
k so my first entry was too long LOL! Anyway I am looking foward to getting some tips on how to keep a garden healthy, when the best time to plant and fertilize is, and maybe some ideas on placement. look foward to hearing from anyone
I have been adding lime and slow release fertilizer to my garden plus lots of compost matter and manure. The fall and early winter are great time to add amenities to the garden because it has the rest of winter to break down and enhance your garden soil. Winter is also a great time to prune trees while the growth of the brancehes is dorment.
spookilicious, i know what you mean about the costs of urns and statues. i get alot of mine at thrift stores and such. i live in Northern virginia and we have an area called Lucketts. its just a really cool place. i think they are on line, luckettsgeneral store... great prices, garden centers are way over priced.
can i ask what a super white fly is??? i have never heard of it.. is it just in florida??? here in nova we have big problems with jap. bettles, and bag worms... the jap bettles go after my kimberly queen ferns, and the bag worms did alot of damage to my conifers...
OK good witch you are not going to believe this but today I was at my favorite nursery drooling at those statues I mentioned earlier, they are $200 so I drooled and left, I like to go there with hubby and just look at what I might want to purchase in the spring Anyway on the way home there is a great thrift store that I love to frequent, so I walk in and OMG!!! Right by the door is one of the statues that I wanted, The guy says oh you like that they sell at (mentions nursery) for $200.00 Ill give it to you for $75.00 I just listen then he says you know what its not moving Ill give it to you for $50.00!!!! (this is where the heavens open and music starts playing all in my head of course) So needless to say I took it!!! YAY me I am so excited. Now there are still 2 more styles I want but hey im 1/3 of the way there. out
Ok so now the super white fly! LOL Well south florida started to notice that the ficus trees were being attacked by something, like over night they would be fine then one day you got up and it looked a little bare then BAM totally eaten. Not sure if you know anything about ficus trees they are nearly impossibel to kill. So one day my poor ficus bush started to get attacked and Went quick to the nursery to try and save the rest of it before it was too late. They told me they have noticed a new breed of the white fly, a super white fly if you will. Little suckers almost impossible to kill, they were in way south florida the year before and now where in my little neck of the woods. So anyway they told me what I needed to do. You cant treat it topically. You have to feed it this liquid that makes the tree poisonous to the white fly and they dont want to attack it, it takes a year to take effect, so we treated it topically and then fed it the sollution. .
