You may remember last year, when EVERYTHING that could go wrong did..
The BEST thing that happened was when the Asian with the English accent came over and politely asked me if I could come and pickup my decorations that blew over to his yard....while his mom smacked them with a broom and muttered;'Sin, sin, sin.."
We ended up with maybe 120 kids.
This year we had two set ups...Gal Friday gave out stuff at the front and told the kids to see the lab at the back. Her count: 200 kids...at least.
At the back, we had lime-aid mixed with soda water (Green Lagoon) right beside Creature From the Black Lagoon in a coffin beside us..we gave out all 100 cups and had to shut it down..
    Highlights:
A family thanking us for keeping the tradiiton alive...their little 2 year old would only go to houses that were decorated and was only scared of a baseball player mask...
Some mother getting mad at her kid in a PERFECT Harry Potter costume (I was thinking about you Mamma Hooch) who would only approach, but not knock on a door...I asked if he wanted to come out back for 'the green lagoon'...he seemed interested but Mom cut him off at the knees...I hope things work out better for him...not necessarily a happy memory but it has stuck with me.)

Eventually the Asian family came down, and even gramma seemed happier this year and smiled...then this morning I saw the moving van out front and found out they are heading out...I'm going to miss her..she would squat in the grass and smoke this metal pipe...
They supplied the best line last year...they handed out tracts for their church...and one kid asked another who 'Rev Moon' was...the other kid told him he invented the moon pie, then they both threw the tracts away.
    Perfect.

One other incident from last night and it's why I do this...
A little girl, maybe four came out back to the lab with her folks. She was really nervous, but stepped inside the gate and got her drink of Green Lagoon...and gave us the shyest smile you can imagine.
And it dawned on that I don't want to do anything that would make that kid REGRET trusting me...I LIKE keeping it on that narrow line between the DISNEY HAUNTED HOUSE, BEETLEJUICE, AND NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS...an atmosphere that inspires awe and apprehension but not REAL terror...My ancestors came up with this cockeyed holiday to teach each other to laugh in the face of death and winter and disease by faking it out, and I'd like to think that handing out our stuff fosters that sort of optimistic viewpoint.

I so remember that broom incident and still makes me laugh!!!! Funny how people impact our lives and leave us with memories that you will never forget. Glad you had a great night.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before
