We had a drop in attendees last night, between 140-150 after attracting 200 the previous two years. And VERY few kids under the age of 10. We're in a new area and getting a rep for being extremely scarey.
But the nicest compliment of the night came from a bunch of adolescent girls who went through at about 8:00. Back on the sidewalk, once they had "collected" themselves after being scared witless, they shouted out, "You guys are amazing!", over and over again. That was nice.
What were the best comments that you guys heard?

We got a lot of "your house is awesome" type comments said to my parents and we had a Dad come over and tell us he finally gets why his kids want to come to their Aunt's for their ToT'ing.
The kids once we stopped making them scream had comments about how scary our house was and how they liked our house the best (we and our neighbor two doors over go all out decorating).

I didn't get a "compliment" per say. However, I did overhear...
We had a party with people who knew people. Friends of friends and family. My neices had their friends over, of course. School kids, ya know. Well the older nieces' friends are older, and although nice with "Yessir" all the time, they were a bit... smart allic, ya know?
So I was leading folks through 5 at a time through the Haunted part of the party for the first time. I was on that group. The older smarty kids. Just past the Toxic Prop and into the Gravedigger's / WItches cove, I heard them say "Man this is F#%^in AWESOME!" "yeah man, this ROCKS"...
coming from them... where I had expected a "ahh that's lame" or "I've seen better"... it made me feel really good.
OF course, I had gotten a LOT of folks telling us we did a heck of a job and loved it all, this was the best for me.
This was my first "haunt" for our parties. I've helped at a local haunted house, but htat was 15 years ago!

Two young boys come running up the street, stop and slow down at the cemetery....we here, "Ohhhhh, wow!" They get to the entrance gate and the shorter one says, breathlessly from running, "We can do this...." Then shoves the other guy in ahead of him.....Theywalk together looking wildly around, get nailed by the coffin popper that sends them running for the door. After a great reward, they hesitantly begin their exit....jump when the reaper steps towards them and sprint for the exit....then run back down the street yelling for thier parents and they needed to see the greatest house ever! Now if that didn't make my me feel like I was 10 again, nothing will!

Several neighbors came by to take closer looks & the one guy always managed to catch my hubby & chat with him, but would miss me! So when I missed him ~again~ on TOT night, he made sure to tell hubby that I did a great job & enjoyed seeing it. I also loved seeing the kids' wide eyes as they came up the driveway. All of my props are static so I think that freaked them out more, wondering if anything was going to jump out at them.

Not direct compliments but overhead as people came/left our house:
1st: a young girl who walks half way up the sidewalk then turns around saying to others in her group "We've already been here". I suspect she was too scared to go any closer.
2nd: two girls around 12 years old who were scared but walked to the front porch to get candy. They were clinging to each other and screamed when we spooked them. They came back about a half hour later to do it all over again, with the same result.
Really just seeing everyone's reaction, especially those who would walk up slowly, wondering what was going to happen... to those who jumped when the witch laughed or the person sitting still wearing a Scream mask jumps at them... to walking up behind someone who is getting candy and having them jump when they turn around.
For me that is what makes the time and effort to build and decorate all worth while.
