We live across the street from a soccer park. Absolutely no lighting in it so it was a neighborhood destination hot spot for the kids in the neighborhood at night (WAS because we moved in and called the cops whenever they would go there and start with the noise and trouble). So anyway my husband, my daughter and I were outside waiting for TOT's and hubby says did you see that?? I said see what? He said there's someone up in the park...I yelled at him and he yelled something back but I couldn't hear him because of our music. I thought he was trying to mess with me because it's Halloween night, so I said yeah right. He says keep watching. So I'm staring at the park waiting for any movement. All of the sudden I see a road flare or something really close to it(Roman Candle?) being lit and sparking red and white and someone just standing there staring at it. Hubby says run inside and get the binoculars. So I run in a grab them and we wait for another "show" to start. Few minutes later sparks again. Hubby grabs the binoculars and he says there's a guy up there dressed in overalls with a Jason mask on and he has a butterfly knife(he was swinging it around or something).
This was beyond strange and scary so I told hubby call the police. They've done 0 patrols so far and with all of these kids running around and this lunatic lighting something and just staring at it while wearing a costume and playing with a knife just doesn't feel right. So he calls and explains the situation and runs inside to get his "friend" who has "5 little friends". My husband in all his infinite wisdom starts walking over to the park. I said are you out of your mind?!?! We have no idea what this person is doing or how good their mental state is. Then he decides he's going to walk down the back of our yard and sneak around the alley and come up along our neighbors house to try and get a better look. I said if you step one foot outside of this yard I'm going inside and so is our daughter and I'm not answering the door for anyone. He stays put. Police finally do a drive by about 45 minutes after we called and this person was gone.
I took 0 pictures of our haunt because I didn't want to take my eyes off from where this person was. I did not want my back turned to the street or the park. We don't know where he went to, we don't know who he was and we have no idea what he was doing but it scared the s**t out of me and I don't scare easily. I've never experienced anything like this before and hope I never do again. It was that unnerving.
I told my daughter about it while it was going on and she gave me a look like I hired someone to scare her and the other kids. I had to tell her I swear on my soul I have nothing to do with this and I have no idea who that is and that I didn't secretly hire anyone to do this.
I saw it with my own eyes and I still can't believe this happened. Hubby was sure it was a grown up and not a kid being stupid. At this point I would really love an explanation about what we were seeing. I'm hoping one of the neighbors knocks on our door tomorrow and says that was me at the park. It would really put my mind at ease.

sounds like good halloween fun.
scary lighting, scary costume and obviously scare tactic's that work.
nobody was hurt, and if he was lighting flares, he wasn't hiding from anybody.
i think your halloween imagenation got the best of you.
and for all his hard work, ya called the cops!
if next year it rains during your halloween haunt, you'll know why.
karma's a real witch!

Sounds like you got punked. I'm sure it was just a harmless prank. Kind of ironic that you set up for Halloween trying to scare people and end up getting freaked out yourself.

No we never did put the flyers up. We ran out of time. The whole being punked feeling wasn't there. We called the police because he was swinging a butterfly knife around. Was it fake? Was it real? We have no idea.
Recently in my daughter's school an incident happened on one of the buses. Two boys that were on the bus had a fake gun. They were pointing it at the other kids saying they were going to shoot them and waving it around. The kids on the bus had no idea it was fake(Fake ones look as good as the real thing) and were freaking out. Throwing themselves on top of the younger kids to protect them and climbing over the seats to get away from these 2 boys.
If this guy had a real knife and decided to start going after the children walking around the neighborhood would I have overreacted then? Because we lacked the knowledge of his intent I feel we acted appropriately.
If it rains on us next year for Halloween next year because I called the police then so be it. There was no jokey vibe with this person. It was downright creepy. I wouldn't call hiding in the dark and lighting Roman Candles or whatever it was on dry leaves, swinging around a knife and then hiding in the dark again "hard work"."Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says,"Oh Crap, She's up!"
