well....if you have not put a candle in them and they are only carved for a few hours MAYBE you could eat them..Having been exposed to air they tend to start to mold, etc..Pretty much they become part of the compost heap, or I throw them out in the woods for critters to munch on.

I've got tealight candles in them both are on a small round glass plate so everything is contained and not runing onto the pumpkins. And the flames arent very big

I give my Jack 'o's a decent burial, with some kind words and a GREEN Burial in the compost so their spirits may enter the earth from whence they came, only to provide a warm glow on my porch next Halloween reincarnated.

Mine go on the compost pile. Other than food safety issues, I wouldn't recommend eating them mostly because they don't taste that great. The pumpkin that we eat in pie or soup, are the much smaller variety, usually referred to as "baking pumpkins". The larger varieties that we carve are really lacking in flavor.

I build a jack o lantern totem in my composter with a couple of my solar garden lights in the top few. Its amazing how fast they decompose. A few days later I retrieve the lights from the bin.
Undead and loving it!

The jack-o-lantern pumpkins are not the same kind we make pie from. (I'm lazy anyway; pumpkin puree in a can for me!)
