Just thought I would let everyone know~

Dawn of the Ogden Zombie Crawl

Tyler Deamer was in Denver three years ago, leaving after seeing a concert by comic Chelsea Handler, when he noticed a commotion across the street.

"There were hundreds and hundreds of zombies walking down the street, unobstructed, interacting with the general public in their own environment," recalls Deamer, 32, of West Haven. "It was amazing."

The zombies -- who turned out to be humans dressed in zombie makeup and clothes -- were raising money and awareness for a Denver food bank. As Deamer watched zombies crowd around a volunteer victim, who struggled before succumbing and turning zombie himself, the West Haven man had a thought.

"We haven't had a good, organized Zombie Crawl in Utah," said Deamer. "I figured I could organize one myself."

The Ogden Zombie Crawl is a benefit for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Deamer's brother-in-law is a leukemia survivor.

Deamer said Ogden officials were happy to come onboard, and have asked him to make the crawl an annual October event. Before the walk starts, people will be on hand to apply zombie makeup for a fee.

The route, which starts at Union Station, makes its way to Washington Boulevard and circles back to Union Station, will not be closed to cars. Zombies will be required to stop at red lights and wait their turn before stumbling across the streets.

"We'll have well-behaved zombies," Deamer said, with a laugh. "We'll have kid zombies, zombies on skates, lacrosse team zombies."

Salt Lake City's ERT Ghostbusters, a charity performing group of "Ghostbusters" film fans, will arrive to do zombie control.

"We'll keep the order," Deamer said.

Protesters will picket the zombies at one point in the route, and volunteer victims will be scattered along the route. The victims will be marked with an "X," and will be wearing white, pretorn T-shirts that have been taped back together. They'll scream and protest, then become part of the zombie horde after a tear of the shirt and a quick application of makeup.

"It will be great street theater," Deamer said. "The police may get some 911 calls, but that's why our victims are marked, so the police will know it's not a real attack."

What Deamer and his friends look forward to most is clawing at the windows of posh restaurants along Historic 25th Street. Even though Deamer has posted fliers all over the downtown area, he suspects a few startled diners won't know what is going on.

"One of the best parts will be when a car pulls up, all the zombies will turn and look at it," Deamer said. "We've already heard from a couple of photo clubs that are coming to take pictures."

And after the spectacle, who will clean up the gruesome trail of blood?

"That would be my mom, Molly Landrie, of Harrisville," Deamer said, with a laugh. "She will lead the clean-up crew. My grandmother might help, too."

When the movable party returns to Union Station, the fun continues and the fundraising begins.

The party and a screening of "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Paranormal Sleepover will benefit the Union Station Foundation.

More than 200 people have committed to participating in the zombie crawl as of earlier this week, Deamer said. He figures that means about 300 to 500 will show up.

"It's going to be a lot of fun, and it's going to get bigger every year," Deamer predicted. "Denver's crawl draws thousands now."

    FOLLOW THE RULES

For the full list of rules, visit www.ogdenzombiecrawl.com.

    Zombie dos:
Dress up. Bloody up. Moan, moan, moan. Stay with your horde. Pose for pictures and videos. Bleed. Interact with and scare nonvictims.

    Zombie don’ts:
Don’t run. Do not touch people. Only attack marked “victims” you know. Do not wander off the route. No zombie pets allowed. Do not bite protesters. Do not drink and crawl. Do not play in traffic. Do not leave the street littered with body parts that fall off.
