Oh my gosh! I don't think they will vandalize her house for organic candy - kids don't care about what kind of lollipop it is and will probably not even notice.

However, they will do something to her house for this crap she's passing out:

    from the article....

"the 40-year-old mother will drop something different into their bags this year — boxed organic raisins, agave sticks, seashells and herb-seed packets. She doesn't mind spending slightly more on them than she would on candy."

    WTH?!
    Is it Halloween yet?

    uGH.

We used to have someone in town that gave away some sort of semi-sweet seed thing. It was sesame seeds in honey or some such semi-sweet concoction. It was a little bigger than a piece of Trident.

And it was horrid & promptly thrown away.

Well, organic candy can taste just as good or better than any other candy. I like to give out things that I can support, and since I eat a vegan, natural, mostly organic diet and support Fair Trade efforts, ideally I want to give that stuff out at Halloween. It tastes good, though there's not nearly as much variety as with the mainstream stuff.

There are some kids that act like anything that isn't what they're used to is trash (before they've ever tasted it), and won't come to my house if they think I'm giving out all-natural goodies. So this year I'm giving out a mixture of mainstream and natural. For the natural, I visited Naturalcandystore.com and bought some Fair Trade dark chocolate bites from Equal Exchange, which are delicious. I also got some natural popcorn balls there, and got some organic (very tasty) Yummy Earth lollypops from Whole Foods market.

When kids come to my door they'll get a mixed selection of the natural stuff and the sort of stuff they're used to. I'm hoping some of them will at least taste the natural stuff and realize it actually tastes good, and/or that it will plant some kind of seed of conscientiousness. I can hope!

Now, I can understand not giving out stuff like raisons or herbed seeds, but candy is candy.

No offense, I have some friends who are vegans, my ex-wie was a vegetarian, I'm not myself. I admit to and submit to my omnivorous nature, but I understand an opposing viewpoint. None the less...Halloween. Trick ot treat. The key word being TREAT. And the definer of that word is the person who is receiving the treat. All natural wood chips are not treats. They want chocolate in huge quantities. Preferably Hersheys but Nestles will do in a pinch. With copious amounts of refined and processed sugar. Why change a good thing?
Its so nice to be insane, no one asks you to explain...

If you are like most Americans, you'll spend about $20 on Halloween candy this year.
    Couldn't stop laughing after that.

when I was a kid, I'd of gone home and gotten a bottle of drano and drano'd her front lawn for handing out that crap... =) (im older and wiser now, and know how to use photoshop to make flyers that tell everyone to avoid her). if youre not going to hand out the good candy, please, don't bother. turn off your lights, or just tell people you ran out. I would NEVER eat "boxed organic raisins, agave sticks, seashells and herb-seed packets"... that's like saying "i have no idea what halloween is about, but here's some healthy stuff I wouldn't even eat". seashells though? seriously? WHAT IS THE HAYELL is a 4 year old supposed to do with a seashell? They haven't even seen Demolition Man yet at that age...( =P ).

going HEALTHIER with your candy is perfectly fine, and mixing the two is an awesome idea. Chocolate is chocolate whether its natural or refined, most kids won't notice the difference. Lollipops can be made with dried bird seed if they taste good... really. What I can't get behind with this woman in the article is RAISINS, AGAVE STICKS, SEASHELLS, and HERB SEED PACKETS. There is no child on this entire earth that would go... WOOHOO. I got an HERB SEED PACKET from that last house! We should totally tell everyone about them. No. Most kids would throw that out...if you are going to trick them into the healthy stuff, I like your idea. Mixing Natural with Regular, and Actually Giving out CANDY....whether it's natural or processed.

OK I guess my kid was weird but when she was little she would go through her bag and eat the tiny boxes of raisins first and glady give me the Snicker bars.
I agree though that seashells and seed packets are a bit much. "Look mom! I can grow my very own basil!"

Now, perhaps mine is not a popular viewpoint, but, when I was a kid, getting weird stuff that was difficult to figure out was part of the fun of trick or treating! I remember the first time I saw a popcorn ball. I thought, what in the heck is that?????

Weird treats are all part of the fun and oddness of the celebration.

Plus, not everyone can afford those expensive premium chocolates that are so esteemed.
