why is there a specific time for trick or treating? I noticed that alot of places hold it during the day which would take most of the fun away. Ive also noticed some places have it the night before or the next day after. Why cant it be when you want to( reasonable though) so everyone, both tot's and haunters can be happy?

It is what you make of it the towns feel they have to be proactive and and have limited )mostly daylight) hours to protect the little ones who are permitted to wonder on their own and to limit the overtime they pay for extra police during said time. We on the other hand want it as dark and scary as possible so our haunt can be its best. With that said at my former haunt The time was 5-8 and usually the night before Halloween. Despite heavy police 4-5 on bike plus at least 2 cars for a town no bigger than 3/4 mile square but not once did they ever give me any trouble about being lite up to near 10. So I say do what makes you happy most town officials police inspectors what not will simply ask you to close up long before they do anything official especially if your polite. And gosh it takes along time to turn off each individual peice........

Fortunately, I don't live in one of those regulated towns so we get trick or treaters on October 31st and they usually start around 6 pm and it's pretty much over by 9 or 9:30.

Yup, around here it starts "after dinner" and ends around 9 or whenever folks turn their porch lights off.
I still think (hope) that this is the case in most areas. I *think* regulated TOT hours are still the minority.

That's why I asked about it in the Utah thread -- around here, house-to-house trick or treating is always Oct. 31 (even when it's a Sunday) and can last pretty much from dinner time until 10 p.m. or so. Of course, trunk or treat events would have scheduled times since they're coordinated by a business, church or community group, but regular TOTers don't have a set schedule.

Tots start hitting the sidewalks just before dark here but My Cemetery doesn't open until dark
It's steady from 7pm-9pm and stops within minutes of 9pm. Hope this extended Daylight savings goes back to November vs. October!!

I'm glad I don't live in a town like that. We might start to get the really young kids around 5:30 and most everyone else starts to trickle in after six and it goes until around nine.

VERY regulated here.
TOT is on a Saturday this year.
If the 31st falls on a Friday, TOT will be held on Thursday because you can't POSSIBLY have anything other than high school football happen on a Friday night. That is absolutely SACRED! Somewhat less sacred is the actual Christian Sabbath. No TOT if the 31st falls on a Sunday. It is a proven fact that children seeking candy whilst wearing a Spongebob costume on a Sunday could possibly cause the Great End Times and unleash the Apocalypse.
Also, TOT is from 6PM-8PM. PERIOD. After that, the local constabulary will cruise the streets, reminding stragglers that Halloween is OVER.
Ahhhhh... good times!
