I come inside the house after setting out some blow molds(*) at the front of the house to serve as temporary decorations before the big day. Pick up the newspaper, and sure enough, the police blotter has listing after listing for Halloween items being stolen from all the surrounding streets, within steps of where I live. One of the perks of living in a sleepy little town is that things like this aren't supposed to happen.
Blow molds are back inside, replaced by some Dollar Tree severed hands and a foot. I am pissed on behalf of the people whose decorations have been taken, but am just as pissed at the chilling effect I'm sure these reports will have on the neighborhood. I love going around and seeing everyone's displays, be they major or minor. I don't care if it's blow molds, inflatables, or a stack of pumpkins, I'm in favor of seeing every imaginable expression of the Halloween spirit and now I'll bet people will be reluctant to put out their treasures.

OMG I thought it was going to be YOUR items stolen before I read the post..I'm glad they weren't but sorry you can't feel safe. I have cameras and alarms but am still paranoid. I checked out the video from a new camera to see what it looked like and couldn't believe how many people were out there that I have never seen before.

Me too, Deadna!
Wow, glad it wasn't your stuff, Bluefrog, guess we'll know the danger if your cheap stuff gets lifted.
Makes me nervous just thinking about it!
I would put my bucky out on a garden bench in the front yard, then one year just felt really nervous about it and put up a pvc witch prop on the bench instead. But recently I am even nervous about putting the buckies out early in the backyard. Only have a regular 4' chainlink around the yard. Certainly not impregnable!
Dang I wish we had a dog!

Nah, the dogs would eat the buckys.......but maybe if you electrified the chain link fence.....no wait I didn't say that

I won't put anything out early I can't easily replace. While I've never had any decorations stolen, I don't want to start now. Only a couple years ago did I start putting out my cemetery fence and columns a couple weeks before Halloween, whereas before I'd put EVERYTHING up that day and take it all down at night. No matter where you live it's a gamble. Cameras and alarms can help but someone hell bent on wrecking/stealing something will usually find a way. I feel bad for people who have things ripped off, but you really have to weigh the risk.

Pretty rotten that people steal things. I've never had anything stolen but I still worry about it enough that I usually don't put any of my good things out until Halloween. Last week I bought a really nice tombstone. I debated whether or not to put it out today, and decided to put it close to the front door where potential thieves wouldn't be able to see it from the street.
Worst that ever happens here is it gets really windy in October and sometimes decorations can just blow away if they aren't anchored down enough.

Sorry to alarm those who thought it was my stuff that got lifted. If it had been, the screams emanating from this area would have been reported on the national news!
Still, it's all happening so close to my house that I'm extra nervous about not only my outdoor decorations, but also what could happen the day of, when the really good stuff comes out to play. I'd already decided against incorporating some of the little details that are my pride and joy, but which would be easy to steal even without benefit of robes and capes.
Based on the descriptions, it sounds like the local thieves are partial to bluckies, so mine does not get to come out and play as I'd hoped.

In addition to the whole phenomenon of stolen Halloween decorations being incredibly lame, I think it's absolutely bizarre that thieves could be "partial to bluckies." Weird!
"WHAT'S out there?"
"I don't know.......it was little and brown, and low to the ground!"
