Halloween Spending Returns to '08 Levels
GDA Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 9/27/2010 1:11:38 PM
Washington — There will be plenty of ghosties and ghoulies out for Halloween this year as consumer spending on Halloween products — costumes, candy and decorations — is expected to return to 2008 levels, according to a survey conducted by BIGresearch for the National Retail Federation (NRF). According to NRF's 2010 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, Americans will spend $66.28 on costumes, candy and decorations, up from last year's $56.31 and comparable to the $66.54 average spend in 2008. Total spending for the holiday is expected to reach $5.8 billion.
Of their Halloween budget, consumers are expected to spend the most on costumes, an average of $23.37, followed by candy ($20.29), decorations ($18.66) and greeting cards ($3.95).
Noted NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay, "This year, people are expected to embrace Halloween with even more enthusiasm, and will have an entire weekend to celebrate since the holiday falls on a Sunday."
This year, the highest percentage of people in the survey's history will dress up for Halloween: 4 out of 10 people (40.1 percent). And 11.5 percent will dress up their pets as well. Additionally, 33.3 percent of people will throw/attend a party, nearly three-quarters (72.2 percent) will hand out candy, 31.7 percent will take their children trick-or-treating and half (50.1 percent) of consumers celebrating will decorate their home or yard.

definately greaT news! But I'll wait to see what the Scrooges and Griches on my street do... lol. They weren't any better in 2008 before the economy completely tanked, or 2007 or 2006 etc... But nice to know things picking up everywhere but cranky old people street. Then again, I hold out some small hope that the spirit of Halloween might still bite these people in the a-- and me and the one guy on the next street over won't be alone in doing it up!~ We shall see. Cait
PS: THEY WILL NOT get me down and AS USUAL I will make up for Mr. and Mrs. Cranky.
PPS: To all the Cranky's who wish I'd stop making them look cheap and draw kids from other neighborhoods and towns... kiss my (explaitive)!!!

Oh, based on those figures I think I've contributed to that total this year and covered a few people as well. I bought all my larger purchases over the past two months and now am focusing on accessory items I still need. Haven't even thought about candy yet.
While I don't think some store's have had the same level of inventory compared to the last few year there seem to be more places, at least in my area, that either are dedicated to Halloween or have a decent section. I'm also wondering how many stores have held back on displaying Halloween until October.

I think those figures are largely carried by members of this forum. $66!? Yeah, right!

This actually doesn't surprise me because stuff is flying off of shelves where I am at and it isn't even October yet.

Same here. I went shopping last night and there were lots of empty spaces on the shelves.
And then there was Walmart, which had an entire row of nothing but plastic trick-or-treat pumpkins. An entire row, and they had to put them separate from the rest of the Halloween stuff because they took up so much room.

I was in Lowes tonight and they were moving the Halloween display to another end cap so they'd have more room for Christmas. I asked if it was going on sale, and the young lady said: "Not for a couple weeks, and the way it's selling, there won't be much to put on sale"
