Many of you know it's been a bit of a rough patch for us this year.
Both budget and time to build were cut short by various things including my brother being forced to remodel their business (bye bye time) early in the year and then by my car killing over (bye bye budget) at the start of Summer.
It was disheartening, especially as this was to be our big change over to a new theme. One only half done. I had a few choices: Do what we did the last 5 years, or deal with the half-done theme.
I was not enthralled with either choice, and was in a down right funk most the summer. Then a co-worker complained of my desktop one day (a grim pic of haunts past). And I went to find a 'less depressing' pic. I found this...
The longer it sat on my computer staring back at me each day, the more I began to enjoy it. Bringing back memories of my own little moonlit scarecrow so long ago...
What's more, it was simple enough I could focus on it in the time remaining, and it was a departure form the past 5 years, and I've always wanted to toy with the whole pumpkin creepers idea, which would fit well...
The Harvest was born.
It's a rarity I name our themes, a sign how fascinated I became with this...
First order of business was to find a way for me and my son to fit in. The Scarecrows being the only logical personage, I needed to re-design mine from the past.
They needed faces. I've begun shaping the burlap.
For Kyle to 'blend in', we've begun his own version.
There's six total in all right now. That's about right. Need to find similar clothes for the lot, and would like to hook up a couple of the dummies to a motion detector with speakers.
My own...well, it's going to be separate. I need to be walking around. We've coated a piece of burlap with liquid latex. It will be glued to part of my face and "sewn" on at the edges. My old rusty scythe to add to the effect.
Next, I wanted to use real pumpkins, as I really lack the storage to build proper creepers. Yet, I've only seen creepers done as full on prop builds, didn't know if the idea would work with real pumpkins.
Oh, it's gonna work...
Finally, while I'm well aware those are Sheaves of wheat in the pic...wheat isn't exactly common around here, and when it is you surely can't procure sheaves of it like that these days.
Corn...LOTS of corn was needed. Hence me posting more corn every few days in the 'found today' thread.
I can't just set it up in droves around the yard just yet, however. Still need to mow and whatnot. So, it's currently biding time in one massive clump 3 foot deep 6 foot wide.
Figured may as well clue the neighbors in.
Lots of work left to go, but I'm finally excited again.

OH, and thanks for posting that 'inspiration' pic...I think I'm going to have to use that as my laptop background. Love it!

From the look of the sheaves in the pic they look more like corn stalks than wheat anyway. I love this idea, fairly simple, very spooky and traditional looking. Throw some straw out among the sheaves and you can hide behind different sheaves so it's never the same scare twice. Love the pumpkin!

Now this is a look that I can really get into, simple and hauntingly eerie. Looking forward to seeing it come together!

I love the look and the idea. To me, the outdoors are FAR creepier than being inside. The haunted houses/tours that always give me the biggest scare are the corn mazes and the outside trails.
I can't wait to see how you progress with this and the inspiration picture is perfect!!_____________________________________
