Now that I am on board for charity drives this year I have been wondering about something that has been sort of hinted at in the past.
When you do a charity do you:
A. Give all donations to charity.
B. Keep a portion as an investment in the haunt. If so what portion and what is your justisfication?
thanks,
Bubbs

I don't do a haunt. But with my Karate school we do events. I take from the event any money to cover expenses, all the rest goes to them.

Most charity events of any type are like this. So if they don't have a good turn out they could make nothing, or even worse depending on the deals they made, they might owe money. Sponsorships play a big role in getting these events off the ground, so they know that they could at least cover the expenses if things get ugly.

We are taking donations this year and 100% goes to Humane Society....Everyone will give you different percentages for different reasons....I just have a hard time asking people to help finance my hobby....I do it for fun and the memories but if something good can come out of it on top of that then why not?.....ZR

What would you consider expenses?
Tape to hang props?
Rental space?
Pizza for your 12 helpers?
Fog juice?
How about that prop that breaks?
I agree with people that say its there hobby so no one else should pay for it. But at the same time you are going out of the way to put on a bigger show. Something that might encourage you to pay for some big expendables. And not to mention more people = high risk of something being broken.

"Excuse me. Let me clarify this. What expenses would you justify compensating with donations?"
Great question. The cost of a haunt could make it so no money is donated. In my Karate school, what I do/buy I write off on taxes as a donation to an event. If what we are doing is going to cost a good chunk of money, like renting a hall or auditorium, then I only donate a portion and I find sponsors / advertisers for the rest. Do not overlook sponsorship or advertising, it can offset a good chunck of what you do.Making the world a funnier place, one blucky at a time

So do sponsors get their money back if the fundraiser goes well.. or is that just part of the advertising?
Also has anyone convinced any of the major halloween stores to sponsor by loaning props?
