I’ve been getting emails, private messages and comments on the forum requesting I post some pics of Salem, so here it goes. I am short on time and only chose a few out of the thousands we have. The good, professional looking pics were taken by my husband who is a phtotog on the side. I take random, not so good ones that capture the crazy moment!
Around Salem:
These next two were taken around Christmas 2009 when we flooded and then had a blizzard. The harbor and the Friendship ship are at the end of our street. Note that the lighthouse is not supposed to be IN water, and in the first pic, you can see the end of the walkway under water.
This one is just a foggy morning and unfortunately a bad pic I took with my phone as I pulled out of our street on the way to work:

Beautiful! I've always wanted to visit.
So, do the people of Salem really get into Halloween and decorating their houses or is that just a stereotype? I've always wondered if it is anything like the movie Hocus Pocus, minus the resurected witches of course.

Thanks for sharing. I would love to be somewhere where that many enjoy Halloween. I would also love to visit the witch museum. That whole era of time is such a blot on American history. I used to teach a unit about the witch hysteria in junior English as we studied the literature of the time.

Thanks, guys!! We've been here almost 2 years now and I don't see myself moving out of Salem any year soon. We absolutely love it.
Printersdevil, you're right, the mention of the witch hysteria in American history is so small, and usually the facts tend to be a little misconstrued. We've learned quite a bit about that short, yet really awful, period in our past.
Madame, to answer your question, this is what I posted in another thread:
We already have a giant spider web from our one bush up to the second story window in the front of our house, with the big spider. That's been up for a couple of weeks, and we are working on the other bush in front of our house. On the side, we have a purple light web and another "light" spider that moves. We also bought one of those big sprawling hangers of a witch that says "BEWARE" in red blood. For the other bush in front of our house, we're thinking of buying some cool vampire hanging prop, a long wooden support beam to paint black, and hang the prop from it high above. We'll be putting a fog machine and a blue or green spotlight on it. For the spider bush, we have a strand of purple lights under the web this year, but we also have a strobe light with "Halloween sounds" that we'll use.
Here's an example from last year:

Living in Salem, Mass doesn't provide much yard with houses, so we got lucky with our bushes and the use of our front fence. When we get the rest up, which some only gets put up for the weekends, and some will go up the weekend before and of Halloween, I'll post more pics. We're on a one-way street, and on the heritage trail, so we get a lot of traffic so it works for us to use the front and that corner of our house. The side window to the left of the spider around the corner is where our big which hangs from to greet oncoming traffic.
Surprisingly, living where we do we thought a lot of people would decorate their houses for Halloween. Including ours, we only saw a total of three houses last year!! Our neighbors tend to stop by and thank us for decorating so they can enjoy our decos rather than putting up their own. I think they love the attention, too, because tourists are always stopping and taking pictures or video taping our house.
