How do kids even know about the Classic Horror Monsters?
I have to make an effort to expose my kids to the classics like Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman.
They aren't on TV anymore.
Used to be on every Sat morning! (or at least some sort of monster)
Silver bullets to kill a werewolf? Crucifixes and garlic to ward off vampires? Frankenstein's fear of fire? The Mummy's curse? Ask a young kid about this stuff and you'll get a blank face.
Admittedly I think we adults are to blame. We think the old stuff is....well... old. I watched the Wolfman with my 6 year old son, expecting him to be bored silly because he's been raised on Star Wars and other graphically exciting things.
Despite the lack of color and special effects he was really into it.
The music and the acting built up the drama and the story line was simple enough to understand.
It's kinda sad looking at costume selections with my kids and they have no idea who some of these CLASSIC monsters are.

I will have to get back with you.... Since you brought this up, I know my son dont like scary movies because it gives him nightmares. He dont like gory but that is okay, I dont like it either. He enjoys ghosts and knows I love vampires... Likes to dress up as something other dead or some kind of reaper. But the history and myth of all of it... I am pretty such I would be getting blank face too.

My kids have been brought up on the classics! I think it's a parent's job to make sure their kids are exposed to all the right things.

BTW, if you have Turner Classic Movies or AMC, they show the Universal monster flicks pretty frequently during October.Dear Sweet Leota, Beloved By All. In Regions Beyond Now But Having a Ball...

I'm raising my son right
I've started him off with the classic horror movies (I don't let him watch anything crazy) He loves Nosferatu and Return of the Fly. He also has classic monster toys.
We keep it spooky around here

No kids yet, expecting the first one come November, but the classic monsters will be present in his life. Best way I can think of to watch horror movies with a youngster without risking great amounts nightmares.

Classic Monsters are like Classic Rock. Unless the elders pass on the knowledge, they will be lost forever.

I agree with what's been said. It is our responsibility as parents to pass down the classics, be they movie monsters, the Beatles, Golden Age Comics, or whatever. As an adult with a serious interest in Halloween and Horror movies, my children wanted exposure to that world as something we could share, and there's no better place to start for the young ones than with the classic Universal monsters. It gives them a great taste of the atmosphere and culture without the super gore that they'll no doubt encounter later. I have 2 sons, the 15 year old has graduated to Romero, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and even more recent fare while I'm starting round 2 of introductions with Dracula (Lugosi) and the Wolfman (Chaney) with my 10 year old. It's as fun for me as it is for them.

Amen, Madame Leota! I don't want my daughter to grow up thinking vampires twinkle in the sun like a Christmas tree!
Last year, Count LaGhostly bought us the Legacy DVD box sets: Frankenstein, Wolfman and Dracula. Now she's got plenty of required viewing/homework to keep her busy the next few weeks.
