I like the entire season and all the things that go with it. The decorating, the seasonal events, the weather, etc. Its just not one night or one function for me. Its everything!

Halloween night is the culmination of the effort. I really enjoy the weeks/days leading up to Halloween and getting everything set-up and to my liking. The actual TOT hours are a chore, and while fun, always seem too busy to really enjoy the effort you put into it. I think the optimum time for me is about an hour or two before TOT, when all is set up and you can stand back and admire it all. I also take some time each year after the last TOT is gone, taking some pics, enjoying a cold beverage and talking with neighbors or friends that stop by. The after glow is short lived once you start tearing things down and bringing them in for the night however.

The offseason.
I actually enjoy building stuff more than displaying it.

When my kids were little, I would have said Halloween night. It was so much fun to dress them up and take them trick or treating! Now I get to enjoy the whole season and all the preparations so I guess it's a trade off. I love spending some time everyday throughout October adding to my display, making changes, enhancing where it's needed. Now Halloween night is actually a little sad for me because it's all over!

Both have their enjoyable qualities. I like being able to make decorations at my own speed and arrange and rearrange where i put decorations. But then I also enjoy Halloween night when the decorations have a little magic to them and the tots come to be scared.

Although the night itself is great, I get long term enjoyment over the entire year.
Just two nights ago I was giddy about the new cemetery entrance I'm building.

I love it all, but Halloween night is the whole reason why i do it all.

I get a lot of joy from the anticipation of it, the slow build up of autumn, the gradual release of Halloween stuff on the store shelves, the long nights spent in the garage and all the many hot glue burns...finally setting stuff up...the weeks directly proceeding Halloween are my most treasured.
The day itself is a bit of a rush to get the final touches in place...attending the TOTers and all. At the end of the night, I do tend to spend a few minutes alone on the porch, when all activity on the street has ceased...to just soak it in. How cool my props look out there, and during the actual display. The culmination of a lot of hard work. That final vestige of awesome, because all too soon it will be November and another year has passed.
Don't get me wrong, I savour the actual night, but I think it's the days and weeks (hell, *months* ) ahead from which I derive the most pleasure, building and finishing projects.
