Hi guys. I was just wondering what everyone's haunt styles are? Some people go for blood and guts, some for big scares, and some for more understated styles. What's yours, and what are your tips for pulling it off?
I like to think of my style as quite whimsical, and incorporating little 'hidden' scares. I don't personally like a lot of gore, and I try to evoke what I see as the more magical aspects of Halloween - like catching something out of the corner of your eye and not being sure quite what you saw. I find that much scarier!
So, what's your style, and why, and how do you pull it off?![]()

I love the effect of lighting and the pure ambiance.
That, skeletons, fog, a cemetery, mmm-mmm-MMM!
LOVE IT!
Tend to go for the classical Halloween. Skeletons, Witches, Ghosts, Vampires, Ghouls, you got it!

I'm with IshWitch and Shadow. I love having a spooky, classic Halloween atmosphere. Boarded up house, lightning, fog, graveyard, singing skeletons.

I am more classic I guess. Plus since there are so many younger ToTers in my neighborhood I try not to make it too gory. I certainly dont mind scaring the adults and the oh so brave teens. We will turn it up a notch on them. But the little ones we just let the props do the work. If I have a little one too scared I go up to them and take the mask off so they see whats under the costume. Then they cry even more!!!
We dont need a body bag, we need a bucket.............and a strainer.

I like creepy, eerie, "scare yourself sensless" style.
I don't think anything is scarier than one's own imagination. I like to give a little ambiance, a subtle hint of dreadfulness, a haunting indication of dangerous possibilities, and let the individual's imagination take them to their own dark, scary place. It's fun to spook someone, make the hairs on the back of their neck stand tall & give them that tingly sensation that an unknown someone or something is lurking behind them, ready to pounce! Oh man...I am soooooo looking forward to this year!!

Spooky classic here all the way. I don't care for the gory stuff really, not that it doesn't have it's place, I just prefer the classic monsters and cemeterys and fog and creepy lighting.

Couldn't have said it better, Ryadread!
I have only a few small gory props - I just don't find the gore scary; only gross. So I definitely like the creepy, scary feeling with some nice lighting to make the effect come alive. Someone is going to pop out or come up behind you, and big scares catch you off guard! But, yes, I don't want to make the younger ones never come back to my display because I made them cry...NEW FOR 2012 in Butler County, PA ~ AT WORLD'S END 2012 ~ Ghastly scores of Cobham Manor's history will be exposed...sleep tight, cherubs...

I don't do gore at all in my display. I love old-fashioned ghost stories with more creepy atmosphere than blood, and I try to simulate that feeling in whatever I do. This year, my display will have lots of elements from Disney's haunted Mansion - creepy, yet lighthearted!

A Halloween prop is a terrible thing to waste..
