It seems like alot of haunted attractions focus alot of energy on Gore. My question is what is more inportant the scary, creepy factor or the blood and guts? Can you have one with out the other? Just looking to hear some opinions.![]()

I prefer creepy and scary over blood and guts. Creepy kinda lends itself to your imagination. Gore is just kinda gore. Like, "Eww, look, that guy has an ax in his face" versus "Holy croak, I wonder what's behind that tree
".
Make sense?
But I DO believe that everyone's tastes are different, so there will be many more replies to your question I'm sure.
I forgot to answer the other part of your question... I think you can definitely have one element without the other. There is nothing gory about my haunt at all - just creepy - and I've never heard any complaints.
You know you have a successful haunt when the ADULT visitors pee their pants.

I'd have to say creepiness, too. It's much easier to turn someone's stomach than it is to make them jump; if an attraction just grosses people out, rather than scares them, it's really not accomplishing much, in my opinion.

Creepy and scary for me every time.
When I look back on the films that freak me the most it's the ones which have a real psychological scare element to them that work the best. I tend to get over blood and gore easily. It's much easier to dismiss blood & guts as silly or a but of fun whereas psychological scare are much harder to shake off.
Just thinking back to movies like Wolf Creek, Blair Witch (yes, that one did freak me out). Heavy on the psychological scare elements / desperation of the characters in their horrible situations and some blood and gore.
I think some of the best scare elements are situations where you are already on edge, perhaps after a "warm up scare", and then you see something but you are not quite sure what you have seen. For example (and don't laugh too much) the scene from Jurassic Park 3 when the pterodactyl emerges from the smoke / cloud. All you see is a shadow to start with and then a bony and freaky creature emerges ready to eat up the humans.

I prefer creepy, spooky atmosphere. For me, blood and guts do all the work for you and leave very little to the imagination. Same for music. Sounds of chainsaws and screaming are far less scary than the blowing wind, crows cawing and footsteps in the dry leaves.

Spooky is the goal of my haunt. Witches, Ghosts and Skeletons all the way for me.

I agree! Scary and Creepy all the way. I have never been a fan of gore anyway. There are so many movies out all year long that have a ton of gore in them...Halloween is just one day a year, and I love that day to be as scary and creepy as I want

Spooky and creepy gets my vote. Gore is too easy.
What doesn't kill you can still make you walk funny.

Cant really say any more than whats been said already.

This is my take, and I apologize in advance if I offend anyone. Remember this is just a 2 cent opinion.
I look at it like profanity in a comedy skit. Anyone can get a shock laugh by throwing out some profanity, where the best comedians can get a laugh without it. Not to say that there are not good comedians that don't use a little vulgarity now and again, but they do not typically rely on it. Its the same with blood and gore in a haunt. Anyone can startle teen girls with a gallon of blood and butchered body parts or a blood soaked nut case running around with a chainsaw. I am more impressed by the haunts that use other more subtle tricks. I think that takes a lot more thought, preparation and talent. Again, not to say that there are not good haunts that use blood and gore, but I wouldn't think they would rely on them exclusively, and you can get away without using them at all. Take the haunt that we all aspire to; The Haunted Mansion. No gore there at all, or at least extremely little. Its so nice to be insane, no one asks you to explain...
