A buddy of mine is thinking about having an all Middle Earth Halloween party. While talking specifics I told him that I didn't think Trolls and Faries were buddies. In fact I said that trolls liked to capture and torture Fairies, Pixies, Gnomes etc.
He said I was "full of it" and now the debate is on. He said althogh they were/are brutish, beyond ugly, and stupid, he didn't think they were "evil".
Whos right? Bare in mind a steak dinner is riding on this.

They have both-"Are you a good Troll or are you a bad Troll?"

aren't garden knomes and woodland knomes the "good" Trolls?

After reading this I guess they are all bad.

The Lord of the Rings novels dont have fairies, pixies or gnomes. Tolkein trolls are evil, as they were made by Morgoth, who was the dark Ainur sprirt from which all evil sprang. The actual term troll was Norweigian in origin, and they were considered fiendish and vile, so one could consider them to be evil, at least as far as humans go. In Euorpean fairy lore, trolls are typically Unseelie Court so are considered evil as well, although it is not unheard of to have a more goodly troll who was Seelie in nature.
The Seelie Court was the "good" court, while the Unseelie was the "bad" court and for the most part the two were not on good terms with one another, although fairies from either court were likely to pester, trick and annoy humans, the Unseelie were more prone to torture and maiming. The two courts were not usually at war or anything so its not like they would attack a member of the other court on sight. They could enjoy festivities together without bloodshed. Humans might have a problem at a party of all Unseelie, since they may be considered to be entertainment and/or the main course.
