This idea came to me today.

In some ways you could say we are artists and Halloween is our medium. And like any artist in any medium, we suffer for our art.

I've had the usual injuries. Hot glue burns, Xacto knife nicks, splinters, scratches, skinned knuckles.

But today, today was different. Today was special. Today, I paid the ferryman. (No! Not literally) I was breaking down pallets, again. This was the last load, the last time I would be breaking down pallets this year. I tripped on a pallet and when I put my left foot down it was on top of a pallet board with the nails sticking straight up. Nails went straight through my shoe and right into my foot. It was deep enough that when I hopped the boad came along with my left foot, I stumbled again and wound up stepping down on my left foot again, driving the nails deeper; board was now thoroughly attached to said foot. I had to step on the board with my right foot, pinning the board down, and then lift my left foot off the nails. Now I was off to the MD to get some shots. Clean blood off of hardwood floors, etc. It is now evening, and I can barely walk. If my foot feels like this tomorrow, I'm going to have a dickens of a time working. Drat! Ok you TOTs I have now bled and felt serious pain for you. I just paid my dues. Now, where is my mommy? I need someone to hold me, my footy wreally wrealy hoorts. BADLY!

That was my story, what is your's? How have you managed to maim and mangle yourself for our craft? LOL

Lordy Mike I winced in pain just reading about your 'nail' biting experience (couldn't resist) Hope your foot feels better soon.

Can't say I've ever suffered for the craft...although it's hell on wheels trying to put up lights and hanging ghoulies when you're only 5 feet tall and no one...and I mean NO ONE...sees fit to offer a vertically challenged lady some assistance.

LawP - C'mon, use your broom!

Haha Terror Tom, I was thinking the same thing yesterday. "There isn't any wood stain that matches the effect of real human blood." Damned expensive though. heh.

I'm still wincing from reading what you did. Super, dooper OUCH!

I have no real notable injuries but the only 'tattoo' I have is from making Beloved I was smoothing out the black monster mud on her dress and drove and raked a wire right into my finger. Since I really couldn't stop what I was doing, I just kept at it all the while mixing my blood with Beloved's dress. I'm guessing because I didn't wash the wound until hours later, it was enough to deposit the black paint into my finger permanently. That was over 2 years ago and I still have the mark.

I can definitely sympathize with you, MikeBru. While I didn't drive a nail through my foot, I did once sewed my finger to a costume I was making on the sewing machine. The fabric was too thick to have the guide foot down, and as a result, my finger went right under the needle with the material. Lots of crying, screams and pain for days was the ultimate result of that little adventure, but once the bandage came off, I was back at and finished the costume.

Man can you feel the pain as you read that or what? Hope you are doing somewhat better. Not as bad as that but I remember putting up some cobweb I was on the top of the ladder as I was climbing down I thought I was on the last step and I stepped off but I was actually on the 3rd step. I landed with my foot twisted. No one was home I tried to call for help from my neighbor but they were not there. I actually crawled from the outside of my house to my bedroom propped my foot up hoping the pain would go away. After an hour and it blowing up like a balloon I called my husband he came home took me to the docs. Almost broke it but was lucky. Was on crutches so I sat on a chair outside with my leg up and telling everyone else what to do to get ready for Halloween, well as much as I could stand it I tried to do stuff but everyone kept putting me down sort of speak.
