One of my side projects last year was to build a small bat house. I'm happy to say that this year, we have three little bats in the bat house. Over the fourth of July weekend, we saw them swooping around at dusk having a grand old time. I'll try and keep an eye on the bat house and monitor their patterns. At this point, I don't know if they're permanent residents, or if they'll leave in the fall/winter.

I've never heard of a bat house. Sounds really interesting. Picture please? :-)

Awesome! I lived in a very old log cabin once. I woke up one night and found thousands of bats hanging on one side of the cabin. They were crawling through the cracks in the chinking and getting inside. It was amazing. The next day they were all gone. I know nothing about bats but they must migrate.

Very cool! I've heard some cities actually will put up bat houses in hopes that the bats will help control mosquitos. I wish my city would do that, the mosquitos here are AWFUL!

    I just found this:

    Feeding
The majority of food consumed by bats includes insects, fruits and flower nectar, vertebrates and blood. Almost three-fourths of the world’s bats are insect eaters. Each of these bats is able to consume one third of its body weight in insects each night, and several hundred insects in a few hours. This means that a group of one thousand bats could eat four tons of insects each year. If bats were to become extinct, the insect population would reach an alarmingly high number

Very cool! I've wanted to add one to my house for a long time. How long was the bat house up before you had bats move in?

Linus: You've heard about fury and a woman scorned?
Charlie Brown: Yes, I guess I have.
Linus: Well that is nothing compared to the fury of a woman who has been cheated out of tricks or treats!

Here is a site with about 20 different downloadable plans to build your own bat house.
