I was looking for some new fonts for a number of projects, not all of them strictly Halloween related. I did a search and came across the following site:http://www.1001freefonts.com/horror-fonts.php

They offer to let you d/l all 1,001 fonts at once for $19.99, but that seems like an a bit of a pig in a poke. You could end up with hundreds of fonts that either already have or don't need.

Fortunately, that isn't necessary, and as you'll notice that the link is for the category 'horror'. There are plenty of other useful font available in other categories as well.

Now I just have to remember how and where to post these in my computer...

EDIT: Well that was simple enough, Done & Done...

Hi kymm. I'm not a vista user, but I got this from the microsoft site.

    1.

Open Fonts by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Fonts.
    2.

Click File, and then click Install New Font.

If you don’t see the File menu, press ALT.
    3.

In the Add Fonts dialog box, under Drives, click the drive where the font that you want to install is located.
    4.

Under Folders, double-click the folder containing the fonts that you want to add.
    5.

Under List of fonts, click the font that you want to add, and then click Install.

EDIT: I can't say for sure that the website listed above is entirely responsible or not. What I can say is that I d/l and unzipped a bout 10-12 'font files' early on yesterday.

That site was the only one that I had not visited in the past. Everywhere else were sites like here, or DA, where I have a gallery of my artwork, E*bay, My Yahoo E-mail account and so on.

Several hours after visiting that site, I was attacked and affected by what I believe was a 'Trojan'. I had a similarly unpleasant experience late last year....

Both times I had turned on my computer I was trying to surf the web. The first time, I was constantly being pestered by what thought was a particularly aggressive pop-up add for anti-virus software.

I think that we've all seen similar junk e-mails and such before, warning of the dangers of your computer getting infected and boasting about their product. Usually, as in this case, I did my best to ignore it.

It persisted, and at first, I did think that it was a bit odd. I use Firefox as my default browser, and as such, it usually block such annoyances. But I pressed on, unconcerned. Like most of us, I was busy 'taking care of business' online.

    Then it got worse...

All of a sudden, the wallpaper on my computer was replaced by a large black box with big red letters:

"Warning! Your computer has become infected!"

...or words to that effect. At that point I was naturally concerned. This was the first time an ad had actually sized control of my computer. Obviously I was too naive to see what many of you have now already guessed. It offered to scan and fix any and all viruses, etc, for a price...

That should've been my first clue. However I was desperate to continue surfing, so I bought the "2010 Internet Security Suite' software or somesuch. Then things went from bad to worse. Then The next day I couldn't even get to launch windows. I had to do a series of system restores.

I was eventually able to track down the location of the so-called 'anti-virus software', place it and all its' components in the recycle bin, and delete them. I also went to my bank to apply what they called an 'affidavit of fraud. They investigated the financial transaction from their end. Once they determined that my claim was valid, the bank refunded my money...

Then began the arduous practice or relocating and restoring all the files and programs that I had accumulated since I bought my computer back in '03....

UGH! what a nightmare... I also found out that, no small surprise, my 2003 Norton Anti-Virus software that came with the computer, was obsolete, and unable to be updated any further.

So I bought the latest 2010 version, & got a annual member ship to Carbonite as well. I figured that if this should ever happen, that I could minimize the headaches I was experiencing now.

Flash forward to yesterday, where once again,I had shut down my computer not more than an hour or two after visiting the '1001 fonts dot com.' or whatever. When I turned it back on, as soon as the wallpaper and icons appeared on my desktop appeared I was greeted by a 'windows security alert' that informed me of a threat to my computer.

It asked me if I wanted to activate my anti-virus software. This smelled familiar, a little too familiar. I tried to get on the Internet, and was balked. Finally, out of curiosity, I said yes. Then a program 'demo' calling itself 'AV Security Suite'(which I never heard of before and had certainly never intentionally d/l ) started 'scanning' my computer (or should I say 'scamming').

It found a who host of viruses, etc, that according to it, demanded immediate attention. Then it balked any attempt to go anywhere on the net. Any webpage, including this one would be 'blocked' from view. I noticed that the URL was right up there as it should, but IT would let me see or interact with the sites.

Also when I was being blocked' It kept saying in the header: "Internet Explorer, cannot display the page " yadda yadda, because going to that site 'may harm your computer' b.s. That was particularly telling, because as I mentioned before I prefer to use Firefox over IE. In fact looked closer at the header, and noticed just to the left of the 'warning' was the little fire ox symbol, not the one for IE.

Anyway long story short, That and some other cues made it obvious that I had stumbled across that same sort of malicious 'software' as before. This time, however, i literally wasn't 'buying it'.

I still had to do a system restore, but at least I have my stuff backed up on Carbonite, and in a day or so (18 hours at last check) I should be whole again.

I don't know if the font site is entirely responsible, or some hacker submitted a 'font file' with 'a little something extra' slipped inside. But I think it might be best for all concerned if you guys disregard my earlier, premature recomendation...

Well, I talked to an 'analyst' from Norton. He says that just because I did a system restore, it didn't necessarily get rid of the malware. Sadly, this seems to be the case. On the plus side, I was able to dig up an old dell laptop that someone gave my mom a while back. I have so far become painfully reacquainted with the expression 'fat fingers'... That and the fact that the e,r,t,a,s,d,n, keys are almost completely worn off hasn't made it any easier. Thank God that I was able to get a full sized moused plugged into this thing, or I'd have gone mad. It still is taking me twice as long to type this all out. Still, it will allow me to stay in touch until I can get this situation resolved...

I personally would not ever "buy" or download any fonts from a place that isn't a well-known commercial font house because of the reason you have mentioned above. That said I don't know of places these days that sell fonts like they use to back in the 80s when Desktop Publishing was starting out for the masses and everyone it seemed was selling font packages--like Adobe and Agfa and other legit smaller font houses. You use to be able to walk into any computer software store and choose from a wide variety of font CDs back then. After a little bit more searching I do see that MONOTYPE however is still in the business and sells Adobe and the other major font foundry typefaces. I would trust their stuff and recommend that you take a look at their offerings. They have been a respected name in the printing industry for decades. For halloween-type fonts, try searching by "halloween, monster, scary, creepy", etc. The site is pretty nice and you can enter in a sample text and see how it looks in that font. The "waterfall" feature will show different font sizes, "character set" will give you all the possibilities in that font. Maybe someone else in the print industry can mention a few more recommendations of where to go.

Sorry it's been a tough experience for you.

Sorry to hear Thom. I had a similar virus planted by my kiddo's surfing and a restore didn't fix it. Seems the virus was called Aurora and as you attempt to delete it's .exe or .dll it rewrites and reloads it'self under a new file name. After some research I came across Malwarebytes. It's free and so I loaded it and watched as it ran and while attacking the virus and it's rewrites it was a real battle. But after the virus attempted to do it's thing over 200 times Malwarebytes finally got ahead of it and got it.

Back to topic I like this site and no problems... http://www.halloweenfonts.com/

    I use malwarebytes too...

every now and then we get a tough bug and have to run the computer in "SAFE" mode to run malwarebytes because the virus won't let me run it normally. But I've been very successful with it.

Yeah, I'll have to keep that in mind next time. Currently on the infected computer, It freezes up about 30 seconds or so into startup. Not enough time to launch anything really. Not only that, this time around, it cuts out my keyboard, and won't respond to my attempts to do a system restore.

At least last time, when I bought the phony anti-virus software, I was able to do that much. Then I was able to locate it there in the programs file, big as life. I deleted it, and no more problem. I was able to go to my bank and fill out an 'affidavit of fraud' and get my money back. This time however, I didn't get fooled into purchasing it, but in the end, it's still gonna cost me, it seems...
